Our company are debating what they would do if the lottery sweep came up? I'm not a member and have said, "Ask not what the lottery can do for you but rather, what you can do for the theatre-going public?". People have remarked that I give of myself too much but that's me, I guess.

There's a terrific quote out there somewhere from George Bernard Shaw, who was quite a theatre guy himself.

I wish I could find it again, so that I could deliver it verbatim, but, in essence, Shaw says that the very definition of a "gentleman" (or gentlewoman) is a person who gives themselves over to something -- such as the theatre -- that one perceives to be larger than one's self. You do all you can, and you give all you can. AND, in return, you require that the world provide you with what you need.

A friend of mine who, among other things, puts in a lot of time volunteering at our local theater brought up this concept in conversation. That is to "give without measure". This doesn't mean to give every thing you have and leave nothing for yourself but if you have something to offer, offer it and don't keep score.
