Charcoal is the blackish residue consisting of impure carbon obtained by removing water and other volatile constituents from animal and vegetation substances. It is usually produced by heating wood in the absence of oxygen (see char), but sugar charcoal, bone charcoal (which contains a great amount of calcium phosphate), and others can be produced as well. The soft, brittle, light, black, porous material is 85% to 98% carbon, the remainder consisting of volatile chemicals and ash, and resembles coal

Char-Coal
Charred Coals.
Have you ever put out a campfire?
Noticed the black Charred Wood that remains, which is not completely burned?
Charcoal!
Usually made of hard woods as hard wood burns more slowly and can be "charred", then cut into "brickets" and/or some are in "rough form" and sold as charcoal.

I found a good source for you with much information on the components and makeup of charcoal and its variations of uses.
It is mostly made of carbon .
Charcoal is also used for filtering such as in fish tanks,or it is used by artist and engineers for building projects.
The military also uses charcoal in one of its components for bomb makings, and it is considered a hazardous waste by the government also.
hope this helps...click on the link below.
