Hi Gripper. Well, first, I'd like to say how heartened I am by all the pro-independence answers you've got. Despite the fact that, since the 1960's, there has been a philosophy in academic and media circles to denigrate Britain and our unique influence and achievements in world history, we are still one of the world's most influential, civilised and highly-regarded nations. Our unique culuture, freedoms, law and constitution would be lost if we were to allow the political aspirations of certain politicians to downgrade us into just another state of Europe, against the will of the majority of the British people. There is no problem with Britain entering into common trade agreements etc, unifying industrial standards or any of those arrangements which would be mutually beneficial to us and Europe. The important issue is that we retain our independence as a nation. There are rising political parties now that have independence from Europe as a key policy; it's your vote..............

Yes, United States of Europe is what Churchill said once in a conference about 50 years ago, but i think it is still early for UK to take this action. The difference of UK and other member states (the rest of 24 and future ones Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Turkey, or whatever in the future) is that UK has a strong economic status, the Sterling Pound still a strong world currency; politically, UK still has it's own importance and strong voice on the EU meetings (summits), culturally, UK is one of the most active country on the development of its cultural and creative industries, thus this brings a lot of income to the country and finally UK chose to opt-out from the EURO, i totally agree with it. Objectively because the Pound is the symbol, the sovereignty of UK and subjectively, i like to feel, touch, use the Pound.
To let UK be the USE (United States of Europe) is still a long way to go, we like what it is now and sharing with others, not always is a good thing, i know and i understand the harmonisation and sharing the sovereignty with other member states is one of the main competence of EU, but can we forecast that once the harmonisation is completed, will UK be much better than now? That's the riddle!

I heard Bill Clinton say ,when asked by a journalist if a statement he had just made would not undermine our national security
say, well Americans are just going to have to get over that sovereignity stuff.I heard Bush just make a similar comment a couple months ago.Sovereignity is what this country is all about.
I don't want to live under foreign rule.Look what a corrupt worthless boondoggle the United nations is.It is totally inept and worthless. It wastes massive amounts of taxpayers money since we pay the majority of the tab! Most of the countries vote against us most of the time and we pay some of the countries that hate us most, millions of dollars per year that is turned around and used against us. I am a hundred percent disabled Vietnam Vet and I did not go through that to be told by a bunch of self serving politicians that basically, they are willing to give my country away.
No Britain and no Europe over here.No thanks!

Britain is already a part of European Union. It is a loose confederation which can become a federation if the power of center surpasses that of constituent states. But I don't think this is a possibility in near future.

Britain has more in common with United States, Canada and Australia. In my opinion the bonds of language and culture are stronger than geographical proximity.

I would like to see Britain in the EU.
With UK Europe will be stronger and UK may became more influential in world matters and solutions.
Alone what is the future?
Or do you think that to be part of the biggest market on Earth is enough?
We use to say "you eat the meat and we take the bones".
I believe in Europe and UK has to make a decision, to belong or stay out.

Look at the EU. There won't be any closer union in the next 25 years at least. And if there was, it might be in Britain's best interest to join, but would it be good for Europe to have the US's Trojan horse right in there? We wouldn't mind the Scots and Welsh, but the English are better left on theit own, where they want to be anyway.

The United States is dreaming. England and the British Empire will never let it happen. We may be spread out throughout the world but we will defend England.

Probably true to my chagrin, the only good thing about it is that it would stop the drift toward becoming one of America's States. In my opinion we should remain an independent nation.

I doubt if we are given the vote as promised that the people of the UK would want to do this. Take the Eruo for example, I don't know anyone who want's it.

Good luck in passing that through Tony Blair.
