Archimedes first calculated pi by using successive approximations with a compass. The most accurate
figure he could come up with was best expressed as
the fraction 22/7. However even he knew that he was limited by his crude tools. Pi is an irrational number.
This has been proven mathematically.
That means there is no fraction that can express it

that approximate pi. These are infinite series. The only thing we can say about using these is that the more terms you use to compute,the more accurate your value of pi. There have been computer programmer geeks who have written programs to compute pi to over a million decimal places. And I use the term "geek" with great respect. The proof for validity of some of these formulas is covered in 4th semester calculus.

To answer your question you need to know what pi is : It is the name for the ratio of a circle's circumference to it's diameter. it a constant number that never changes no matter how big or small the diameter of the circle you make. Start by cut some paper circles of varying diameters say 1 inch , 2 inch and 3 inch take a ruler and mark a spot on the edge of the paper circle and position that spot on the zero mark on the ruler. Then carefully roll the paper circle along the ruler and see where you end up as that point return to the bottom of the circle . This is the circumference now divide that number by the circle diameter, you should get a close value for pi. of about 3.1 or 3.2

Now to answer the second part of your question.
Back about three thousand years ago the ancient Egyptians estimated Pi to be about 3 units (you have to remember that their Mathematics were quite primitive and they had no algebra to help them at this time). Later the ancient Greeks developed and used the area of triangles filling a circle method to estimate pi to be between 22/7 and 3 10/71

{pi= sin ( (360/N)/2)*N

pi = tan(360/N)/2)*N { N= the number of triangles try the numbers between 100,000 to 1*10^50) for good results}

This is the modern day formula for the filling the circle method used by the Greek }

around 240 B.C. However this was good enough for building things and such, but is was not good enough for mathematicans however. So a quest was started to find the true value for pi and various mehods were used to get a better and better estimate for the value of pi. In about the 15th and 16 th centry A.D. Various discovery where made about Pi:

1) Pi is irrational { Meaning it does not repeat itself ever ; like 1/3} and it's transcendental { Meaning that powers of and combination of powers of pi will not give finite whole numbers } So all formulae for computing pi will be infinitely long.

2) with the devolpment of Algbera and Calculus, certain series were found to give the approximate value of pi

Pi= sqr ( 6*(1 + 1/(2^2)+ 1/(3^2)+ 1/ (4^2) + 1/(5^2).....) { sqr means Square root}

or

Pi = 4*( 1- (1/3)+(1/5)-(1/7)+(1/9)- (1/11)......)

Those series take a long time to come to the value of Pi that we know Pi to be today. Which bring us to our era, when electronic computers where built, and as soon as they became avialable. Mathematican were able to confirm those series to be the appoximate value of Pi , which are still in use today. it has been calulated the about 15 billion decimal places and is so well known that it is use to gauged the speed and power of all supercomputers and computers that made today and in the future to come. and it being surpassed in the number of decimal places to be counted in. and it pop up in some interesting places.

The symbol "π" for Archimedes' constant was first introduced in 1706 by William Jones when he published A New Introduction to Mathematics, although the same symbol had been used earlier to indicate the circumference of a circle. The notation became standard after it was adopted by Leonhard Euler.

The Egyptian scribe Ahmes wrote the oldest known text to give an approximate value for π, citing a Middle Kingdom papyrus, corresponding to a value of 256 divided by 81 or 3.160.
As early as the 19th century BC, Babylonian mathematicians were using π = 25/8, which is within 0.53% of the exact value.
By finding perimeters of circumscribed and inscribed regular polygons, Archimedes found that π is between 3 + 10/71 and 3 + 1/7.
The Chinese mathematician Liu Hui computed π to 3.141014 (good to three decimal places) in AD 263 and suggested that 3.14 was a good approximation.
According to I Ching (635–713), the Arc of 1/4 circle is 10, the chord is 9 so the pi is √2/0.9×2 = 3.1426968052735445…, while why the ratio of chord/Arc=0.9 is unknown.
The Indian mathematician and astronomer Aryabhata in the 5th century gave the approximation π = 62832/20000 = 3.1416, correct when rounded off to four decimal places.
The Chinese mathematician and astronomer Zu Chongzhi computed π to be between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927 and gave two approximations of π, 355/113 and 22/7, in the 5th century.

The Greeks presumably, wanted to know how the diametre is connected with the circumference of a circle (they basically worshipped the circle believing it to be aesthetically pleasing) so they probably got a piece of string, got a rough figure for the circumference and divided this by the diametre. And they got on average the same number.
As precise measurements were introduced they realised this ratio was somewhere around 3.14 and the rest is history (albeit an irrational history...)

Pi is claculated by (circufence/ diamter).
the circufence is measure by cutting the circle into many uniform(same size and shape) small pieces (theoretically up to infinite), and arrange those pieces in the form of 1 arc facing up, 1 arc facing down, eventually you will get a shape near to rectangle, how near depend on how small the pieces are. pi= [(2 X base)/(2 x high)].
and, pi= 3.14 is just a round off value used for easier calculation, its decimal place endless

Using the general formula that gives the perimeter of any polygon, assuming that it is inscribed in a circle of diameter of one unit. You´ll obtain a number that in the limit is Pi. As you increase the number of sides, you get each time a more precise Pi. As this formula is in truth a series with the size so big as we wish, only big computers can use it to make this operation.
