This was the first of a series of books I think. The wolves had individual characters, story told of their adventures trying to meet up in this ancient place. I remembeer a female wolf had an important part to play. It was about 7/10 years ago that I read it.

The Wolves of Time by William Horwood. This is the same guy that wrote Wind in the Willows. I think there are three books in the series if I remember. They are still available as I have copies at home and I only read them a couple of years ago.

As you already have an answer to your question, I'll introduce you to another author who writes about wolves -- Farley Mowatt. He has a series of books about the Canadian north, with a focus on the animals and the native peoples, that are fascinating reading.
