For the simple reason that the powers that be (conveniently), frown upon violence, chauvinism and womanising.
Whether he should be a hero or not depends on whether you value those three characteristics really. So, in my books, sure, he should be. There is a big difference between a hero and a role model after all...

I think most people love him because he is a product of imagination, just like any other fictional character. He's "safe" and a fantasy so to speak, so people don't pass the same judgement on him as they would with someone similar in real life. He's still popular after all these years because no one complained or objected about him for those reasons.
While I love a good action film, I was never able to get into him because, to me, everything felt recycled. I wouldn't personally call him a hero but I can understand why some people would.

I've always thought that. It's strange that everyone complains about male chauvinists yet respects James Bond. Oh well, I'll never understand people.

He is now, he never used to be that bad. I pefer the old Bond movies. Bring back the old style. I dont watch the new James Bonds, too much violence. As a kid you could watch James Bond, now it has a PG rating. Just plain sad.

JEALOUS? I think you know deep down, that you want to be just like him. Hell, we all do. THAT'S why he is still such a popular movie hero. Let's just hope that Tom Cruise never has the opportunity to land the role..I't would probably put me off Bond forever, no matter who gets the role after I kill TC...

He is popular because that is how "the right people" want him to be, and we just follow like the nice obedient kids that we are. NO he should not be a hero!

"should" is irrelevant, he IS a hero. psychologically, he is the man women secretly want and the man men wish they could be...cool, sexy, decisive, authoritative, knowledgeable, intelligent, talented(read into that what you will), brave, strong, etc.....sociologically, it's just plain good wholesome fun!

He's obnoxious. I never understood why he's so popular. It takes a real man to stick with one woman.
