Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin is dead after being attacked by a stingray on the Great Barrier Reef during the filming of a new TV series.
The 44-year-old's heart is believed to have been pierced by the stingray barb.
He was filming an underwater documentary at Batt Reef near the Low Isles about 32 nautical miles off Port Douglas when the accident occurred.
According to a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman, a Cairns ambulance chopper made an emergency flight to an island in the area just after 11am today (Monday)
An intensive care doctor and a paramedic attempted to treat the popular crocodile wrangler who had a puncture wound in the left side of his chest - without success.
He was pronounced dead on the island, and his body is now being flown to Cairns.

Police have been examining footage of the incident which shows Irwin swimming above the stingray when it lashes out at him. He can then be seen pulling the serrated barb out of his chest before losing consciousness.
Irwin, 44, became famous around the world for his conservationist work and for death-defying close work with dangerous animals, notably crocodiles.
His family is considering releasing the footage of the fatal incident to the public.
Stingrays can deliver horrific, agonising injuries but deaths from the barbs are extremely rare. Irwin's death was only the third known death from the creatures in Australian history.
Police viewing the footage say there is no evidence Irwin had been intimidating the stingray before it struck. He was merely observing the creature.

It was horrible. I read different accounts of what happened, someone says that he was swimming over a stingray that was on the ground, and when they become frighted an involuntary reaction is for them to fling their tail up. It was just a horrible coincidence that where it hit was his heart... some other news station said that the sting ray felt threatened because on it's left was the camera man, and steve was right above, so he attacked steve... and again, the horrible coincidence that it was his heart that was in the way. And now they say that it was all caught on tape... they saw steve get hit, then saw him pull the barb out... then he was gone. It's really upsetting. But I guess it kind of goes to show you what steve has been trying to teach us all along... nature is very dangerous, even to the most experienced...
And I just read that someone said it was being filmed by his wife. It was NOT being filmed by his wife. His wife was with their two kids, I believe in an australian zoo.

He wasn't stung by a stingray. Stingrays usually just sting people, and they are almost never fatal. Only rarely does a person get pierced with a stingray's barb, and it was a complete freak accident that the barb went under his ribcage and pierced his heart.
It bothers me that people say that this happened because he was doing something dangerous, and it finally caught up with him. He was just scuba diving to film for a new show. Stingrays aren't supposed to be dangerous. It's just tragic that a man like that had to go from such a random accident.

He was very entertaining, with lots of enthusiam and a great passion for what he did. He loved animals of all kinds. He also cared a great deal about educating the world not only about the different animals but also the dangers each animal species faced in the wild. He wanted to help preserve endangered species.
Mini biography
Steve Irwin was born in 1962 to parents Lyn and Bob Irwin, who were animal naturalists. He has shared the love for animals all his life, stemming from being raised at the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park. There, he partook in daily duties of animal feeding and care. He quickly established himself with the Queenland's government on the process of the country's Crocodile Relocation Program, in which the reptiles could be transferred and relocated to proper localties in the most absolute humane, non-tranquilizing manner. He frequently implements the non-tranquilizing factor in his televison show "Croc Files" (1999). To date, Steve can claim that he has never been bitten by a venomous snake, despite his bare-hand handling of some of the most deadliest snakes in the world. Steve has been married to fellow naturalist, Terri Irwin (Baines) since 1992. She joins him in his adventures and efforts in almost every episode of his show. They have one daughter Bindi Sue Irwin who was born July 24, 1998.

actual Steve Irwin grew to become into an atheist. i assume he could be happy along with his daughter notwithstanding with all the activities surrounding infant celebrities.. maybe slightly in contact?? i'm particular they're very careful together with her on condition that she is around unique animals. this could sound undesirable, yet i in my view wish she in no way gets harm. Even experts who understand the character of untamed animals can not are looking forward to their habit... Take Steve Irwins dying as an occasion.

He should have worn sunscreen to protect him from the harmful rays in my opinion. What really touched me was when asked about his favourite TV shows, Steve Irwin said "I used to like Thunderbirds but Stingray will always hold a place in my heart".

Steve Irwin died by a stingray. He got to close to it and the stingray's barb tail stabbed him in his chest and hit his heart. This is very sad.
