I use 1280x 1024 mainly.
Their is no correct/best screen resolution, only the best for the particular application you are doing at that moment in time.
Changes can apply many times a day if you go from say Microsoft Word typing then onto some Artwork design or picture editing. Then you need to look into the Hertz speed for your screen refresh rate, which I don't understand, sorry.

Most mainstream PC users (ppl who know very little abt PCs) use 800x600, i guess cause its the default and they dont know how to change it.
Other then that, almost every person now adays has a 17" monitor so they prefer 1024x768. Those with 19" monitors may use 1280x1024, to get the same effect as 1024x768 on a 17".

i would say 800x600 is most common, although i use the ever popular 1024x768

the most used resolution in my experience is 1024x768,its also the easiest to use for long periods
