There are two types of ballroom dancing: Standard and Latin. (Or smooth and rhythm, if you wish, in American style).

For Standard/Smooth ladies wear dresses with long flowing skirt and fitted bodice made of stretchy material. For competitions, these dresses are decorated with rhinestones and extra floating pieces of fabric.

For Latin/Rhythm ladies wear short sexy dresses that show the legs. For competitions, this dresses are also decorated with lots of rhinestones.

You can see examples of good ballroom dancewear at this website: http://www.dancesport.uk.com/

these days you have an option, either long dress which shows leg when you whirl around, or a short one which shows leg all of the time. not being sexist, this really is the truth. to see ballroom dancers in action go to yahoo music, type in the words pussycat dolls. my personal recommendation is to wear what they are.
