Because they have no lives and are miserable and want to share the misery!

My theory is that many people are much crueler, meaner, and blunter (if that's even a word) with each other on the Internet than they are in real life because of the anonymity. On the Internet no one know who you are, and there are no major social consequences if you act like a jerk. This allows people to do and say things they've always wanted to do and say in real life, and probably acts as some kind of catharsis.
The Internet is the place for the inner jerk to shine through.

Hello!! :o) 'Man' is - by nature - a self-serving, cruel, insensitive and mean creature. Humans don't have to be taught how to be selfish. They have to be taught how to share and to consider other people's thoughts and feelings. Sadly - many people are not getting that 'lesson in life'. And you can clearly see the results of that - even on this Yahoo Answers message board. But don't let that get you down. We are only accountable for who WE are and for how WE treat others. It's disappointing and discouraging - for sure - to read many messages - but try not to focus on those individuals. Be a 'nice guy', DL, and maybe - some of YOUR 'nice-ness' will influence others. Have a great day!! Craig!! :o)

I believe people are "mean" mainly out of fear. Most all unhelpful and hindering behavior comes from fear. Fear of not "fitting in" is behind the pettiness often seen in High School. Attacking others touches a very deep tribal tendancy in humans...it unites the "in" (attacking) group and the feel stronger and safer.

My answer to "meaness" is to literally ignore it as mean...it is unhelpful...nothing more, nothing less. If someone swings a bat and hits something they get a hurtful but gratifying crack...if they swing and swing and connect with nothing...the will stop swinging. Do nor react to meanness...it will go away.

I'd like to know that same thing! For the past 6 months I thought YA was a neat place to waste time. Now I'm not so sure. I've never gotton pissed at people's comments till this past week. So you probably won't see me on here for a while now. I wish you the best until next time! :)

I think a lot of people are mean to each other because they have been treated mean some time in their life, and they are to coward to take up for themselves face to face with assailant. So, they strike back where no one can come close to them.

I am not mean to anyone... I think it is wasted energy.... I have no time to be mean to anyone.... I am too busy looking for the good in others..... It's there sometimes buried by years oh heartache and pain but the challenge of knowing people for who they really are is very rewarding.... Wow! Powerful observant question.... ♥

In real life or on Yahoo Answers????

On Yahoo Answers, where nobody knows us, we can be anyone we want to be.

People who are sweet and conservative in real life, can be swingers on The Internet.

Big hairy thuggy gangster types in real life can reveal their love of poetry on The Internet.

And, nice people who keep their mouths shut and take a lot of crap in real life, can come onto Yahoo Answers and become someone who can vent their spleen on others.

I try to be nice wherever I am...but I answered a trio of posts this morning from a lady who drove my blood pressure up....I had to pet all six of my cats to lower it.

Anyways, I won't go there.

Wonderful question you asked :)
