The record for the longest period without sleeping is 11days, set by a student, Randy Gardner in 1965. The 17year old from San Diego had hallucinations 4days into the attempt, but pulled through to 11.
Guinness wont allow anyone to try and break this record though, cause it is medically unsafe, and people can die from lack of sleep.

I don't know what the maximum amount of time someone has gone without sleep, but a while ago they actually put it to the test in a big brother style show called shattered (Don't know if you remember)

A group of contestants were constantly monitored and whoever managed to stay awake won the money

What was interesting though was that they were put through a series of mental tests everyday to see how they mentally deteriorated, and eventually watching them hallucinate.

I think they had to do it for a week - but i'm sure the record would be longer than that as i'm pressuming a week is still in the "Safe" bracket as it were

I believe there was a lady in France that stayed awake for a couple of weeks. I'll look for a source.

My record has to be two and a half days, never again though. You have to keep eating good and drinking, but i really need my sleep, my head just hurts.

I did 36 hours once, I had to travle far and that's how long it took. I think I stayed awake a bit more after that, but started drinking, it all gets a bit hazy.

Certain people have a disorder and literally never sleep, so the answer to your question is decades, but it's quite tragic and those rare individuals have very shortened life spans because of it. The body and mind use sleep to renew and repair.

Ask any woman who has long labors! Mine always last 2 days. Although I should say, between contractions I would fall asleep in 1 minute intervals.
