Hey there Gripper,

I think £5.00 an hour is not enough money in England as taxes and the cost of living are high everywhere. People are asked to pay the same for things whether they earn £5.00 an hour or £35.00 an hour. So yes i think £5.00 an hour is low for people in England.

I would just also like to say to Gromitski he obviously isn't doing much to earn his £35.00 an hour. As he has suddenly shot to level 2 and only been a member for a few days!!!!!

£5 an hour isn't a slave wage in the slightest...but it really depends on the job.

I've done manual labour temping jobs in the past that have only been paid £3.50 an hour - and thats real hard graft work. I can't imagine any job involving yahoo (or the use of a computer) being anywhere near as hard.

I charge £35 an hour for design work nowadays, but thats only because I am experienced and good at my job. I firmly believe that the wage should reflect the quality of the job, the complexity of the job and the skill of the individual.

EDIT: Gripper - I said "In the past" - I meant when the minimum wage was £3.50. I haven't been on a wage that low for almost a decade, but that doesn't mean that I don't agree with it. What I was getting at is that £5 an hour is a respectable wage, especially if you're not even getting your hands dirty. Wages increase with respect and experience, if you have both then move on and get a better job, if you're starting out then grit your teeth and bare it - thats just the way life is. No-one gets paid top dollar when starting out. But like I said, you didn't say specifically what your job is - if you are very experienced and feel undervalued, then do something about it, get a new job.

I do not think that those are slave wages. You have a computer and you cannot be doing any programming and thus it must be clerical of some sort. assuming 8 hours and 22 days (minimum) that would mean 880 pound per month. I know some people who are working more hours doing a harder job for less!

HOWEVER! You must always value yourself (while being realistic) and then see if what is being offered fits. If you are like me... then NO! These are slave wages...Everything is relative!

£5 an hour is below the £5.05 minimum wage. Also we have polish people here for that now, im certainly not willing to work for money that isnt really enough to live on

Do people work for £5 an hour on Yahoo? Would staff members like to tell us? Or are they not allowed to?!

If it's £5 an hour or no job then you should work. if you're only worth £5 then you should do it instead of sponging. If you're worth more then you won't have to earn that pittance for long will you?

I worked for the minimum wage because I didn't want to be on benefits. Cleaned toilets and washed floors. You do what you've got to do.

Well I would scrub toilets for less if it meant putting clothes on my childrens back and food in their mouths.... but then again... I'm just proud and "snotty"
