Fearless Aussie Steve Irwin who had no problem around alligators, crocodiles, snakes, and all forms of dangerous animals was killed this morning in what's being described as a freak accident when a stingray thrust its barb through the 44 yr-old's chest, puncturing his heart.
Although stingrays have venom in their serrated spines they are typically not aggressive and their action are not lethal, however because of the strike to the heart not only was Irwin's injury fatal, doctors say his death was probably immediate.
Truly loved around the world for his courage and expertise around some of the most frightening animals alive, Irwin found himself in some controversy in January of 2004 at his popular wildlife sanctuary, Australia Zoo, when he brought his 1-month old son into a crocodile pen for a reptile demonstration. No charges ended up being filed.
The affable Irwin volunteered to journey to the wilds of Harbor City to capture the elusive alligator, Reggie, but never made the trip after no one had spotted the creature in Machado Lake for several months. The "Crocodile Hunter" had offered to catch the local lizard for free.
Irwin was one of Australia's most recognized personalities ever. Ironically he was filming a documentary about stingrays on the Great Barrier Reef in order to dispel myths about the frightening sea creatures.
The accident happend in shallow waters as a cameraman was ahead of the bull ray and Irwin was above it, marine documentarian Ben Cropp told The Australian. The fish felt cornered, Cropp concluded after seeing the footage, when it lashed out at Irwin.

The couple's daughter Bindi, 8, was with her father in north Queensland, Irwin's manager John Stainton said from Cairns.
Choking back tears, Mr Stainton said Irwin had gone “over the top of a stingray and a stingray's barb went up and went into his chest and put a hole into his heart”.
"He possibly died instantly when the barb hit him, and I don't think that he ... felt any pain.”
Professional diver Pete West was on board a nearby boat and was asked by Irwin's team to call in the emergency.
Asked on Channel 7 if Irwin was alive when they got him on his own boat, Mr West said: “I believe so.”
"He was doing what he did best and unfortunately today he wasn't quick enough."
Dr Ed O'Loughlin was aboard the Emergency Management Queensland Helicopter which was called from Cairns at 11.21am (AEST).
Irwin was being given CPR at Low Isles, off Port Douglas, as the helicopter arrived less than one hour after the incident, but Dr O'Loughlin said nothing could be done to save him.
"It became clear fairly soon that he had non-survivable injuries," Dr O'Loughlin said.

Yes, it is very sad. My heart aches for his children and his family. He was killed by a sting ray that stung him either in the center of his chest or to the side of his chest. His homepage, crocodilehunter.com has some information on their. The Today Show did a special report on him, and it is on the homepage of Yahoo. Very sad story, he will always be remembered.

If you're on the computer already, why don't you just look at the headline news....
pierced in the chest by a sting ray 'cause he got too close. I'm sure if he could have picked his death, he wouldn't have chosen a lame one like passing away in his sleep. So, good for him. Died like he lived. Gotta admire him for that.

Yep it's true. He got stung by a stingray or something. Have to say I'm shocked. He seemed like one of those guys that no matter how much he wrestled with animals he wouldn't die an early death.
