There is confusion over what constitutes a county, particularly in Yorkshire where a 'Riding' is not a county, it's a Riding! The official counties in Yorkshire keep changing, but I believe currently it is as follows:

North Yorkshire - as in NYCC, North Yorkshire County Council
East Yorkshire - often called the East Riding or Humberside
South Yorkshire
West Yorkshire
York - has it's own District Council and is apparently no longer a part of North Yorkshire.

Subject to change, depending on who's in charge at the time!

According to the Association of British Counties, there are 39 Counties in England, although I am unsure about 2 of them.
This is the list they give:-
Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Cornwall, Cumberland, Derbyshire, Devon, Dorset, Durham, Essex, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Herefordshire, Hertfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Kent, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Middlesex (this is one i am unsure about), Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Rutland, Shropshire, Somerset, Staffordshire, Suffolk, Surrey, Sussex, Warwickshire, Westmorland (never heard of this place), Wiltshire, Worcestershire, Yorkshire.
Hopefully someone will put me right about the two I am unsure of.
