I have no doubt they knew that his Tourettes would be interesting to people viewing who haven't really come across it before and they will have cynically banked on that upping audiences, just the same as with Nadia being a transsexual. However, it isn't really exploitation as Pete was totally aware of what the show's format is and chose to put himself out there.
On a plus side, perhaps more people might see someone with ticks and inappropriate language outbursts and not take the mickey, but understand that they have a condition they cannot help - let's hope so. I am sure that is something Pete hopes for.
On another minus side - BB is all about exploitation anyway, so to some degree we can't escape that - they could be said to have exploited Shabaz who was clearly emotionally unstable, and Nicky similarly, etc etc. I find myself getting sucked in to some degree each year, but it really is a horrid horrid show and I hope they stop commissioning it soon.

Just in answer to one of the people above. I can think of far worse people to be a role model to our children than pete. He shown himself to be a caring and sensitive compassionate person who has been through some serious bad times and come out standing tall and strong and not in any way bitter. I'd be proud to be like that and that loser as you called him is much more loved and finacially better off than you now I expct.
As to whether he was exploited, what rubbish, Is £100, 000 for an experience he clearly enjoyed exploitation. Every one that goes work every day for a crappy 15 grand a year, or more, or less, Thats far more exploitation than anyone who went in the BB house ever got.

Pete actually went in there to highten awareness of Torettes. One of main reasons for him going in was to show people what living with tourettes is like and to broaden peoples view points! So I don't think channel 4 took advantage of Pete!

I think when they hold auditions that they are obviously looking for people who have BIG personalities or are 'different' to the norm. If they were all the boy/girl next door, we wouldn't watch it as it would be very BORING! Pete did well to get through and eventually win. It has enlightened many people to the fact that people with tourettes are no different to the rest of us.I say well done BB , whatever the motives for putting Pete through were.

yeah but pete put himself up for it didn't he? he wanted to do it and he must have known that he would be different. in the end it wasn't his tourettes that was entertaining. That didn't really make any difference. Pete was just genereally wicked! And plus, it would have to be a very sick viewer that only turned on a programme to watch a person with Tourettes in a house. If you're going to ask your sort of question, you have to ask if richard was only put in because he was gay and therefore had a high chance of providing entertainment. or if nikki was only put in because of her tantrums. In the end, big brother is all about putting loads of different people from different backgrounds and circumstances and seeing how they react to each other. That's what guarnatees the entertainment

Pete knew what it was about when he went in the house. If anything Pete has brought alot of awareness to people with Tourettes. Maybe they will more understood now and not just be the butt of some micky taking. To answer your question, they probably knew ratings would go up, but are channel four winners?

To be honest I think Pete will be forgotten about in a years time. Sure, he stood out from the rest, but BB contestants are only remembered for so long.

Yes and No...
Pete knew what he was getting himself into. Its not like its the 1st ever BB. There had been others. So in a way he knew when he was doing in. As for channel 4, they took advantage of every1 including Nikki Ashleen and Glyn

No i don't think c4 did take advantage of Pete in fact i think that giving him the chance to take part in BB was great he has so much to give and he had the opportunity to show other people with disabilities that you can do anything and not be scared to show people the real you.

I think they probably did, but I'm not sure that it is a problem. He seemed well adjusted enough to be able to handle BB. Infact i think that it did him quite a lot of good being on the show.
I was more concerned about others on the show, like Shabaz and Sam, who seemed mentally unstable, and were effected in a very negative way by the show.
