"Bull baiting", as it is properly called, is an ancient practice. It involves teasing and torturing a bull so that it will attack the person tormenting it. The "bull fighter" dresses in a bright costume, and dances out of the way several times, adding to the spectacle. This continues until either the dancer or the bull is finally killed.

I would love to see this form of entertainment go the way of "bear baiting" (same thing, but using dogs and bears), rooster cock-fights, and gladiator battles. It should stop. It is unneccessary cruelty, done in the name of entertainment.

There are only 3 ways to stop this, that I know of.

1. Legislation in the countries that practice it. Officials writing law to prohibit the practice.

2. Spiritual renewal/revival, with an inner desire to stop unnecessary suffering in the name of entertainment. This would have to be a nationwide movement to have any effect.

3. Customer disinterest: the show exists because people are still willing to pay to see it done! If they stop showing up, the vendors will have no show to sell.

Perhaps the people of PETA could do us all a favor, and fight bull-baiting in South America and Spain, instead of focusing on restaurants in Chicago that serve fois gras, which comes from peaceful farms.

I am horrified by bull fighting.
However I recently visited the Arena in Nimes, France, and heard the stories of gladiator and bull fighting.
What I picked up on was that this was about admiration for the extreme skill and courage of men in life threatening battles.
It seems to have been an event for the whole community, perhaps popular because it raised the spirits of everyone.

Perhaps there is a part of me that cannot rise to that courage, a part of me that cannot face the savagery in nature.

I know very little about Bullfighting, but I understand that this is an important part of certain countries cultures. It will be hard to get those countries to ever want to stop the violence.

if i get on my soap box ..i will bore you to tears...however I abhor any form of animal sports like bull fighting, cock fighting, pit bulls, badger baiting, who has given us the god given right to treat any species this way... who was the idiot that started them anyway and called it a cultural ritual.. ABSOLUTE RUBBISH..JUST AN EXCUSE TO BE CRUEL.

It's been going on close to 100 years. John Steinback liked it also.
And it's getting more popúlar, than slowing down!!

I couldn;t tell you more about it because i'm totally opposed to it myself. Why it hasn't been banned by now is quite surprising.
