What do you get out of a typical local news broadcast?

I see the majority of a typical broadcast to promote fear. Fear of crime. Fear of economics. Fear of health problems. "Breaking news" is almost always negative. Then there's weather (where they get all excited when the weather is bad in some sort of way) and sports, with a small segment at the end of the broadcast that is positive in nature. If I believed most of what they said without filtering out the shock-value information and discern what the facts are, I would be so paranoid that I would be affraid to leave the house.

Side thought: fairly recently, I've been paying attention to their system of producing a news story. Have you noticed the consistancy (besides the way they talk and their emphatic jestures)? The field reporters spend about 30 seconds to introduce a news clip, play the clip, then a 15-second conclusion, and then back to the studio. "Thank you...(field reporter)." LOL

What do you think they promote?

Take it from an old timer the NEWS has changed since it was deregulated in 1980 making it OK for news programs to make a profit. They used to boast at how much money they spent reporting objective news and investigating.

They are now trying to make money while reflecting the political views of the advertisers and station owners.
They do this by sensationalizing...And getting the "Picture"

There is one channel in Chicago I refuse to watch due to news stories about abandon babies and neglect cases every night...

Without a doubt they produce bad news. I have a local news outlet on now. So far there has been four and counting, bad news story. They also promote what I call the "Why you should be wary...". That is how the medical profession is screwing you, your chance of getting smallpox, what the local teachers are really up to and on and on. On the weather they like to brag about how nice it is going to be, but when the weather appears unfavorable - doom, doom, doom.

First and foremost, as Fox has stated for many years now, these "shows" are not journalistic, nor were they ever intended to be. They present controversy and drama within the political system and quite often, in some of their analysis, such as the Budget and some of Obamas "Czar" appointments, the were ahead of their time. Part of their "entertainment" approach came when Beck had a phone line installed directly to Obamas Press Secretary, to call and "dispute" ANY statement or claim he made, that was wrong. The phone never rang once. Sometimes real "news" comes at the price of extremism.

As a local news producer, I would say it depends on the station you watch and the market you're in. Unfortunately bad news is news. You want to see something different on TV? E-mail or call your local stations with positive story ideas. We don't like putting bad news on TV anymore than you like watching it. Keep in mind, if you don't tell us about your positive stories, chances are we'll never find out about them.

Not both. In my opinion, it is the sole purpose to sell the channel. Sensationalism, they think, will sell. To some extent, they may be right. But, in the long run it will not succeed.

Local news (definition): crime, sports, and weather.
