If you agree, what do you think they should be made to do... and remember they are all not fake Burberry check wearing little hoodlums, some have education and could benefit the community a great deal.

Sam D - read the question... community work in exchange for benefits... giving something back to the community, and not getting stuck in a rut.

I'm referring to a UK model... which means you can put nothing in to get something out.

They do. People on unemployment had to work and pay taxes to be eligible for the benefit. If someone does work he has to be paid for the work, so he would not then be eligible for unemployment benefits.
If you want those people to work for nothing, it won't happen.

Some people just don't have the skills or education to find a new job perhaps free education and courses that will teach new skills would be a better use of time. I think most people that are unemployed want to find new jobs as unemployment benefit doesn't pay out much. Those who just don't want to work should be made to do some sort of community work.

well people who are un-employed and are receiving that benefit have put money into the plan in order to receive the benefit
they do not just give un-employment and is usually for a specific time frame then they have to either get a job or go to welfare
if you are talking about welfare, they should be made to do some sort of community work in order to justify the payments on it

In the US, the process of trying to claim unemployment benefits in itself turns into a full-time job. A job that is thoroughly unpleasant, repulsive, unrewarding and thankless. You're treated like a second-class citizen, or worse, are asked to jump through all kinds of hoops & perfom like a circus monkey... all for what?! Not enough to even pay for the gas that gets you to the damn Unemployment Office. Should they work for their money? Honey, they had worked. That's one of the requirements in order to collect. They wouldn't be collecting if they still had a job.

well that depends , some people paid a lot of money into the fund and maybe it's the first time they are collecting it after 15--20 years of working other people are milking it to all they can get and did not pay that much into it, soooo where do you draw the line. it's a rough decision

Of course but not by giving them tasks far from their skills. I mean it needs to be done in a positive way, more as a project than as a "stuck into a job" thing.

No they shouldn't-The are trying to get unemployment benefits because they DID work and they only get half of what their income was prior to becoming unemployed-this compensation allows them to find other employment opportunities without becoming dependent on that amount of money.

I think people who are unemployed and claim money should be made to do so many hours a week on Community service in their area.

Yes anyone on unemployment should be forced either to emigrate to Poland, or to take the UK jobs that no one else wants.

Or could it be that just maybe the unemployed have dignity too?
