If this is in reference to Steve Irwin, the stingray barb penetrated his chest and actually entered his heart. At the time I am writing this answer, it is unknown as to whether he died from blood loss or from the toxin of the stingray.

The stingray has a poisonous barb at the end of it's tail which it uses for self defence. The poison isn't strong however and is merely used to stun, it is the size of the wound it can leave which can be fatal especially if gets you in a prime spot ie an artery. Deaths from stingrays however are extremely rare.

"If a stingray is threatened, frightened, or handled roughly, it flicks its tail, where a venomous barb is attached, into the person directly above it, either penetrating or lacerating the skin of the victim.

The stinger is a razor-sharp, barbed or serrated cartilaginous spine which grows from the ray's whip-like tail and can grow up to 37 cm long. The barb is coated with a toxic venom. This gives the animals their common name of stingrays."

Bad lucky
since 1945, only one man has died by a Stingray. (Now, they are two).
Its hard to kill only with its poison.
Steve had an stab into his chest, direcly in his heart (so i read it in BBC). Its spine can reach maximum of 20 cm, what means enough to kill a man. ...
really bad lucky. It was great enough and hit at the bad point. (no more than few points in his body would have same effect).

If you look on wikipedia it says a sting ray can be fatal if it gets you in an artery in your leg or in your chest...

So I think Steve got it in the chest.

There is also some speculation tht he had a heart attack after being stung, so perhaps that is what did it. I guess we'll find out from the coroner, if they do an autopsy.

Poor guy, it's a shame. He was a lot of fun to watch on TV. We will miss him.

Quite unbelievable. I always thought that he would die from an animal but not a Stingray.

They have barbs along there spine and tail which carry poison. Most accidents are caused by standing on them but swim too close and you could get caught.Stingrays do not attack humans so I suppose its like jelly fish accidents do happen.
