If the boat was'nt working or he was filming a few extra meters away he would not of been stung.

Every second of life is precious... He was a good hearted bloke and 44 is'nt old.

I already miss him. I take consolation in the fact that he enjoyed every minute of his job more than most people could ever dream to. Condolences to the family and thanks to Steve for the laughs and knowledge... Mother Earth and all of her critters are mourning.

You are so right, every second of all our life's is very precious, Steve Irwin was a brilliant environmentalist and did an awful lot of good work, we got to see things through his eyes that we might have never have been lucky enough to see otherwise, its extremely sad for his family and Australia, we don't have enough big hearted guys like him in this world, yes if he had of been filming a few miles further along then maybe he would still be here doing his 'crazy' but amazing work, I believe in fate and sometimes even for the good like him there isn't damn thing anyone can do to stop their fated path, make the most of what you have and do something different each day so you too have things for people to remember you by, life is far too short and 44 is such a young age, bless him and may he rest in peace.

My sentiments exactly. My eight year old son's gutted as well.

I would not have been surprised if he had died or been seriously injured during any number of his previous encounters with the world's deadliest snakes or some such, but he did seem to have an understanding of almost all the creatures he came into contact with. Which makes it even sadder that he died in a "freak" accident involving a creature which, while capable of inflicting injury, is not considered particularly dangerous.

But what really struck me about the man was that at all times he appeared nothing short of 100% genuine and positive, with a boundless enthusiasm for what he did. Many kids will miss his shows (as will I) and I hope that he will be remembered for a very long time.

I do hope that the BBC or independent channels will have a Steve Irwin night as a tribute.

My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife and children.

RIP Steve. I hope there are crocodiles wherever you are.

Steve Irwin was a man dedicated to what he loved in this life, his family, and the animals he helped protect.

Shame he died in such freakish circumstances, where death occurring from a stingray is usually rare.

Rest his soul, but his spirit will live on in the zoos and wildlife conservations he helped to found.

A good man, full of the enjoyment of life. RIP, and condolences to his family, his two children and his wife Terri.

I was quite upset to hear it. Steve Irwin was a decent guy who tried to make this world a better place. It is such a freak accident and a shame because he was so young and left a family behind. Why does it always happen to the good guys? Ok, he was a bit of a nutter but I never laughed at him, always with him. His enthusiasm was mental. The word crikey will always make me think of him!

It’s a real shame, I was shocked when I saw it on the news this morning. Steve always came across as being larger than life and as such untouchable.

If there is any consolation then I guess at least he went the way he lived - with animals.

Still he will be missed.

i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

He was very entertaining , loved he's shows .

Its a tragic thing to happen but that was his life.

He died at the dangers of he's profession , which he loved from the heart.

I dont mean this to sound nasty , but it would be like any job in the world theres always a danger , like an office worker being killed buy there paper shredder. Who knows it could happen Its part of there job.

I couldn't believe the news that steve irwin had died this morning

It is very sad and doesn't seem right

Stung straight through the heart apparently, and by a stingray?

That is sad
