Regret is what one feels when (s)he has done something and wishes (s)he hadn't. Guilt, however, does not necessarily include regret. You may have had an extra piece of chocolate cake and feel guilty about it but not want to have not had it. If you had it to do all over again, you would do the same thing. You may feel bad about it, but c'est la vie. If, however, you clobbered your partner over the head because you were angry with him and it turned out that you gave him a big bump, you would regret your actions; you'd wish you hadn't hit him.
Anyway, that's my take on it.

Expression of regret need not carry with it any sense of guilt. You may do a right thing and yet you will regret to do that for it might be unpalatable to some body. You will regret as a matter of courtesy without the stigma of blame worthiness. In the expression of guilty, there is certainly an idea of blameworthiness on your part. You are conscious that you are in some way responsible for the unjustified hurt or harm caused to the person to whom the guilt is admitted.

Regret is something that you feel once you have done something wrong and is sorry for that .
Guilt is the wrong or the sin one commits .
In-fact Regret is the guilty feeling .Both these are not exactly the same but can be used interchangeably depending on the situation .

Regret is a feeling of sadness about a fact of life. I regret that I wasn't a better mother. It is similar to "rue". There is a sense of loss because nothing can be done to change the fact that is regretful.
Guilt is closer to shame but not quite. It means responsible for something that wasn't quite right. I feel guilty that I did not show affection to my son because it probably has consequences for him.

No. I regret things that I don't feel guilty about.
I can regret going to a party because my buddy got into a fight and ruined the night. I don't feel guilty that my buddy got into the fight; it's his problem, but I regret the BS.
