i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

I think for the majority of us, although we do not know him in person, we still feel so connected to him through his documentaries and appearances,. He is such a genuine, determined, big-hearted man, and I admire his passionate and friendly nature. He was one of the, if not best, greatest well-known conservationists. He'll be sorely missed and I mourn for him and his family. I grew up watching the crocodile hunter, and I never expected to see his death so soon and sudden. Like the majority, I always thought he seemed invincible. Larger than life.

I believe he was always prepared for death. He told his cameracrew once to keep filming no matter what, and that he'll ask for help when he think he needs it. He said that if he gets eaten by a shark or croc, the best thing would be getting it all on tape rather than missing it.

Glasses shall be raised in his honour. Rest in peace, Mr Irwin.

I am from a small town, but still knew who Steve Irwin was. He was a great guy , a presenter and above all an animal lover. Even though he is gone ,he will always be remembered as the guy who was tough enough to wrestle crocodiles.God bless his wife and childrens. May his soul rest in Peace.

He had a pretty risky occupation, so it's not much of a suprise that something like this would happen. Although I've been told its not very common for a sting ray to get aggressive, or to kill someone. It's a sad thing, a great loss for his wife and kids.

Steve Irwan was a true Aussie who didn't care about the whole 'celebrity for money' thing. Every dollar he earned he put back into protecting our great country and protecting the crocs and our unique wildlife.

I remember seeing him drive down the road at night when he saw a snake crossing it. He jumped out and ran back to pick it up. As he did it bit him on the hand. He wasn't sure if it was poisonous or not so as he held the snake in one hand as he flicked through a snake book to check if he need to go to hospital. It wasn't so he let it go and went on his way.

A great Aussie who died too early.

I'm very sad for his wife and especially for his two young children. His daughter is only eight and his son won't be 3 until December. He took so many risks working with very dangerous animals. I can't say that I'm surprised that he was killed by one of them. At least he died instantly and didn't suffer. That would just have made a terrible loss harder for his loved ones to bear.

Sting Rays do NOT attack. This was an accident! Are you known for thinking with and talking out of your a'ss?

As far as having an "opinion" of someone's death, well that's just ridiculous. One could tell how the event impacted him/her; it was a shock and like him or not, whatever your opinion of his lifestyle, it's a tragedy and should be respected. It shouldn't be used as fodder for lemmings and hens to jabber and cackle about.

UPDATE:

I read your highly intellectual and articulate comments and had a big chuckle (silly, silly negroes!) before reporting your abuse to staff. Have a nice day.

It really sucks that he died the way he did but he died doing what he loved to do. Its probably how he would want to go. I do feel sorry for his family especially his kids, i lost my dad when i was 10 and for young people like his son and daughter its gonna be very though. May his family find peace and comfort with family and friends. Rest in peace Steve, may God bless you and your family.

I just found out and was shocked. My thoughts went from "Oh my god!" to sadness for his family and then surprised it was not a crocodile that killed him.

It's weird because I was just talking about his shows last night while watching animal planet. He was a great service to education and the animal kingdom.

Well...it is just horrible...and amazing, that after all of his encounters with such dangerous crocs...that he would go in such a ridiculous fashion..too young, family man...very very sad indeed,
