Right. there was the kingdom of England which occupied the land between the princedom of Wales to the south, and the Kingdom of Scotland. (Most princes of Wales acted more like kings than kings of Scotland) The Kingdom of England absorbed the Princedom of Wales which lost it's separate identity, the first born son of the king of England becoming Prince of Wales. There was a king of England who promised the Welsh a prince that spoke no english. On the day of the presentation he held up his infant son who of course spoke no english. The Kingdoms of England and Scotland joined. Each sharing a king but holding to separate legal systems. For instance the Scots kept what I think is a great feature. They have Guilty, Innocent or Not Proven. This last one means the jury cannot decide if the accused is guilty or innocent. Thus was born the United Kingdom, later the Kingdom if Ireland was added. Great Britain is the area of the land and islands in the channel and the colonies and possessions around the world. This once was a great area of the world until the empire was broken up.

England are the counties (like states in the US or provinces in other countries) which stretch from Cornwall at the bottom and reach right up to Northumberland in the North. England plus Wales and Scotland make Great Britain and then when you include Nothern Ireland which is part of the small Island laying next to Great Britian this makes United Kingdom.
The other part of Ireland is a seperate country called the republic of Ireland with Dublin as its capital.

Great Britain is the name of the island on which England, Scotland and Wales are.
England is a country like Scotland and Wales but they are all united (with Northern Ireland and a few other smaller islands) as the United Kingdom with one government.

Wikipedia has it all:
Great Britain is an island lying off the northwestern coast of mainland Europe and to the east of Ireland, comprising the main territory of the United Kingdom. Great Britain is also used as a geopolitical term describing the combination of England, Scotland, and Wales, which together comprise the entire island and some outlying islands. Great Britain, and simply Britain, are used as informal names for the sovereign state properly known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (usually shortened to the United Kingdom, the UK or Britain[1]) is a country[2] and sovereign state which lies off the northwest coast of mainland Europe. Its territory and population are primarily situated on the island of Great Britain and in Northern Ireland on the island of Ireland, with settlements on numerous smaller islands in the surrounding seas. The United Kingdom is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and its ancillary bodies of water, including the North Sea, the English Channel, the Celtic Sea, and the Irish Sea. On Ireland, Northern Ireland has a land border with the Republic of Ireland to the south.

England is the largest and most populous constituent country of the United Kingdom. It accounts for more than 83% of the total UK population, occupies most of the southern two-thirds of the island of Great Britain and shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. Elsewhere, it is bordered by the North Sea, Irish Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and English Channel

The Commonwealth, on the other hand, is another story:
.When capitalised, "Commonwealth" normally refers to the 53 member Commonwealth of Nations—formerly the "British Commonwealth"—a loose confederation of nations formerly members of the British Empire (with one exception: Mozambique). The Commonwealth's membership includes both republics and monarchies and the (appointed, not hereditary) head of the Commonwealth of Nations is Queen Elizabeth II. She also reigns as monarch directly in a number of states, known as Commonwealth Realms, notably the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and others. The Commonwealth of Nations is sometimes referred as the New Commonwealth in a British context.
