PNG is a lossless image compression, meaning, if you compare an image compressed with PNG and uncompressed at all (like BMP), it would be exactly the same pixel by pixel. There isn't even an unnoticeable difference. This is unlike JPG and GIF, which is a lossy format, and degrades image quality if compressed with them.

The drawbacks of PNG for being a lossless compression is the larger image size it usually have compared to JPG and GIF.

btw, PNG is designed for images not picture, never compress photo in PNG, photos are best compressed on JPG. While images, like screenshots is better to be compressed on PNG or GIF, and don't use JPG format on images, they'd become either: a. Still big in size b. Awful quality degradation.
