Well I've looked and I can't find out, but now it's bugging me too!

I know that it was played into the latter half of the twentieth century, it was played after the final showing and it used to be considered extremely bad manners to leave during the credits both because it was disrespectful to the makers of the film and to the royal family. Later people would rush out to avoid the formality and so the practice was probably phased out over time.
