Astologers were in a panic when they realised that what they do is a farce! Pluto apparently has a massive effect on our destinies yet Ceres, a much larger "planet" whos orbit is much closer to Earth than Pluto, has never featured on an astrological chart....Seems like a crock to me

Yep astrology is a load of rubbish... I asked a question in the astrology section... "Tell me about myself and prove that astrology isn't rubbish" and I gave my time and place of birth.

Suddenly all this specific predictions and ability to highlight important events in the past became a bit hazy... even when I gave them clues... it's so generalised that most people would agree with some of it, especially as a lot of the stuff they say is designed to flatter you in some way.

The biggest question about the planets is... "which planet are astrologers on?"

I'm honestly surprised people still believe in astrology - it made sense millenia ago when things were different, but realistically, the position of Uranus in the sky or whether Pluto is a planet is never going to affect what sort of person you are or whether you're going to find true love this week.

Of course, a counter-argument that astrologers could level at this situation is that the reason their charts sometimes predict things wrongly is because of the fact that Ceres is missing from them, or that Pluto is only a dwarf planet. The only way that astrology could ever work in that case, though, is for every single object in the sky to be included - a ridiculous and impossible proposition.

So, yeah, it's a crock. But we didn't really need this whole Pluto business to realise that.

If you run the numbers, all this pseudoscientific hogwash about planets possibly having an effect on us is rather weakened by gravity being an inverse square law.

F= G m1 m2 / x^2

With equal forces, and taking mars at its closest...

G m(you) m(mars) / x^2 = G m(you) m(Routemaster bus) / x^2

m(mars) / x^2 = m(bus) / x^2

6.4191 × 10^23 / 57 936 384 * 57 936 384 = 7950kg / x^2

1.9123e8 = 7950 / x^2

24054 = 1/x^2

x = 0.00644km , or about 6m

So, a bus passing 6m away has the same effect as Mars at its closest. Therefore, the difference in gravity we experience is greater based on whether we walk to work or take the bus.

It should also be noted that a change in the number of planets affecting astrology was a point predicted in Mostly Harmless, by Douglas Adams.

|I think keeping an open mind is the better course here gang. before you al go patting yourselves on the backs and all.
Each palnet has some type of influence, if not on us as a people directly then certainly on the earth itself. The stars have for centuries guided ships and nomads, we still look to the north star if we are lost and without a compass to lead us back to some place with habitation.
The moon influences behaviours in menstruating women when it moves closer and there have been riots when it does come close to the earth.

The tides also affect us in ways we no longer understand having lost that ability to connect to the world around us any longer.

So before you *debunk* anything you should study it and learn the whys and wherefores. When we make blanket statements such as that it only shows ignorance and intolerance of something unknown.

Wait a second. In about 3 years they will be preparing a new chart with Ceres on it. Ceres, the planet of unexpected discovery, wolvish desire, and, for some reason, cheesecake.

I think their wasting the time ordinary citizens, who, unless devout followers of astrology, the terms and names of the planets make no difference to.
Like Shakespeare said: "A rose by any name smells just as sweet"
My boyfriend studied astrology, and even he isn't much phased by all of this.
All of this will only make a big difference in the future, when living on other planets become a possibility, until then it is trivial pub quiz nonsense.
