Given recent events, I ask myself: Was this a freak accident or do people regularly get killed by these beasts?

This article actually shows a stingray barb protruding from someone's wrist (gross)

This has a link to a chap attacked in the heart by a stingray. He was lucky.

It would appear that there are thousands of attacks a year. Apparently, the Grand Cayman (the tourist bit for stingrays) is still safe as the stingrays there have adapted to human contact.

RIP Steve Irwin. What a great character.

Very few ray stings happen globally. Rays are bottom dwellers and usually a sting happens because a person can't see them and step on them. What probably happened with Mr. Irwin was when he jumped from his boat he startled the animal and it was just *running* away. It was terribly unfortunate that he was in the path of that tail and I grieve with his family and friends.

If by chance you are ever in the water with one and get stung apply hot water to nuetralise the toxin and rest. People rarely die from a ray sting and so it must have been the fact that it was either so close or actually penetrated his heart that killed him.

Rays are beautiful and quite docile creatures and he has swum with them on numerous occasions in the past.

Freak accident, i mean, you hear of when people are killed or injured by sharks when it happens, so wouldn't you here more of stingrays being the terrors of the deep if they killed people regularly. they are'nt beasts. i loved what the croc hunter did so i'm not saying this against him, but he went into the rays home, plus these animals are hardly ever aggresive. do research before you call something a beast.

Only ppl get hurt or killed by sting rays or any other wild animal , if they are overcome by selfish intentions or a huge ego.

We must remember one thing, that ll animals live in constant fear and they react accordingly, humans are very much the same if not worse.

If you are looking to show off in front of your friends, than by all means sit in a pit with vipers, they see it as a threat and are scared. The same with Rays.

Most injuries from rays are caused by accident, very rarely killed.

Lesson, do not hug a Sting ray.

Australia records: Last stinger ray accident (Fatal): 1945 - one man. since then, not even one accident - until now.

Freaky accident!

Injuried is more common, but nothing serious. Mostly during manipulation when they are caught to been eaten. Nothing that does not happend with any other situation within same context (spine or teeth or claws or mussels or something else...)

There were only several deaths recorded that were caused by a stingray- around 5-10 deaths in Australia (accdg to the news).

It was a terrible accident.

If you read the news, then you'll know. They say that only 1 other person has been killed by a stingray in Australia.
