They can go where man cannot readily go. The Marianas trench for example is so deep it would crush most submarines even before they got anywhere near the bottom. So submersibles and particularly remote submersibles are very valuable in discovery of the deep ocean bottom.

The formation and composition of rocks and sediments, volcanic vents (black smokers) and many other features can only be examined using a submersible. The flora and fauna is adapted to the great pressure at depth and tends to disintegrate and decompose rapidly if taken to the surface so again the use of a submersible is essential.

Submersibles were used to observe geological events along the mid Atlantic ridge.

In my field (the oilfield) we use submersibles to monitor and do repairs to subsea stacks, structures and pipelines so we an safely drill for oil.
