whenever we get on rides, before it starts, our stomach starts to wobble and we start to shake, not with excitement but fear. we have to wear all the big belts and other safety stuff where you sit. it confides us that we are absolutely safe but it feels somewhere at the back of our brain that we are almost risking our life. what if the thing just breaks and we are to fly off and crash. can we really trust those pieces of loose plastic that we are held up with?

If it didn't feel dangerous, why ride it at all?

The engineers designing these rides use ample factors of safety in the features that are in place. Usually a better guide of safety is the reliability of the ride operator and thoroughness of inspection and maintenance procedures.

Also the administrative procedures must be strictly followed (i.e. that children below a certain height may not ride). If any of these rules are being ignored, chances are the inspection and maintenance are shoddy and I would recommend abstaining from the ride.

On almost all occasions the answers is yes. At least for Disney parks, engineers (Imagineers for Disney) have designed the rides and they're safety components. They have been tested countless numbers of times before any people, especially any guests, ride them. So, although it feels like you are unsafe (which is oftentimes the desired emotion) in most circumstances you are perfectly safe.

But there are safety concerns...

Most people that are killed on theme park rides die of complications, brought on by the intesity of the thrill ride, from a previous health condition they are unaware of. In the spirit of safety, your number one concern should be making sure you are in good physical condition before riding. (Disney gives many safe options for those with health problems). I suggest a complete physical before riding on thrill rides (roller coasters, motion simulators etc.). Ask your physician to pay special attention to the heart and brain, but make sure it is a "complete" physical because you never know what problems could arise.

Also, always follow the safety guidelines usually established at the entrance of the the queue. (as well as guest services maps at Disney parks)

~Thank you for your concern,

You are more likely to be eaten by a wild bear then you are of dieing on a roller coaster. I myself know that flying is the safest way to go, but every-time i get on a plane my stomach turns and i am sure that the plane will be crashing at any minute. I'm sure you feel fine driving in a car, but you are more likely to die in a car crash then on a plane or on a roller coaster. Engineers use gravity and the g-force scale to keep you in your seat safe and sound, now that's not to say that some accidents have happened and yes so people die on roller coasters each year, but like i said you should have more fear of being eaten by killer ants then you do of roller coasters.

Have always been extremly scared of rides and not because I am chicken, but due to the fact that I don't trust human error not to be in place. I know my own mother ended up with a broken arm when younger due to the carriage on the ferris wheel giving way. She was just lucky that she was only about the second carriage up when it broke. Maybe that is why I just don't trust them.

We love amusement parks. My hubby is a maintenance technician and when we get on a coaster, i ask all kinds of questions. He explains everything!!! The coasters are engineered to withstand what they are designed to do. Nothing is 100% but you wont catch any of us on a ride at a county fair!
