how did Irwin die from a sting ray?

From what I read, sting rays are nonaggressive animals who only react to attacks. Apparently Mr. Irwin accidentally ran into him or stepped on him. In any event, the animal reacted and just happened to nail him in the chest. When I read this information about them, the article said that it is RARE to be hit like this and it said nothing about someone actually dying because of it. This must have been a REALLY freak accident.

He was lanced the heart by its VERY sharp "stinger". The sting is located on the underside of the tail, and many people don't know its there at all. (I'm sure Steve knew, wonder what happened exactly though. Probably a freak incident)

The Stinger Ray has a Stinger at the end of it's tail which has deadly poison in it.

The sting is in their tail, they are usually quite friendly and don't use their sting on humans, you can touch them on their body, most people are killed when they accidently step on their tails.

apparently it swam beneath him and obviously was feeling threatened as it shot out its barb which pierced through steves heart - apparently sting rays will only do this if feeling threatened.
