Chlorine bleach will kill mildew. You could add some to the washer (don't pour it directly on fabric) using the directions on the package, next time you wash the towels.

This is easy....VINEGAR....truly!!!.....
#1...just run hot or warm water in into the washer.....
#2...add about 1 cup of vinegar into the washer
#3...then start to add your towels....
#4...let the towels agitate for 8-10 min. then stop the machine
#5...let them soak....I have actually let things soak over night ....
it wont hurt them.....
#6...the next morning (or after you come home from work)
start the washer and let the load finish...you might smell
the vinegar but it will go a way after you dry them...
#7...if they still smell of mildew you might have to wash them
again.....but it will go a way....I promise
#8...use fabric softener as usual
* VINEGAR * is a natural disinfectant AND deodoriser...
it does kill germs!!!
* It is a good idea to use the vinegar with every load of laundry
that you do...if not, I would suggest it for all of your towels
and sheets it will help keep them fresh,
about 1/2 - 3/4 cup should be enough for regular washes
Also by adding the vinegar to the wash load will keep the
washer from gumming up from detergent
and fabric softener
***I should have added that you will wash your clothes with your
regular laundry detergent...BUT to this you will add the
VINEGAR, use the normal amount of detergent according to
the box or bottle....if you use to much detergent the rinse
water will not be able to rinse out all the soap and the
remaining soap left in the towels will also help to hold
a smell......dry your clothes as normal

You could add Pine-sol to your wash. the pine sol smell does not stick to the clothes and it is an excellent disinfectant as well as it usually removes most odors. by the time you rinse and add fabric softener your towels will smell sweet.

Once they're finished washing, you've got to put them in the dryer or hang them outside so they can dry. They slowly dry in the washer and even after a couple of days if you put them in the dryer they still smell bad. Did you know you can put the fabric softner in with the detergent? How much detergent are you putting in? don't be stingy with it.

I have heard that Pine-Sol removes mildew so it may help for the sour smell you're experiencing.
