When I was first coming out and had a lot of issues with my parents, I went to a bunch of their meetings hoping to hear from other parents what got them to a place of acceptance. I didn't necessarily get the answers I was looking for (but then again the process is different for everyone) but I did meet a lot of really wonderful people who helped me feel better about the realizations I had come to.

PFLAG is an open forum for discussing any issues concerning a family member or friend you have who is gay or lesbian. I don't know how much they deal with transsexual or transgendered issues (the meetings I went to didn't, but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't as a rule). They do everything from discussing personal stories/concerns to advocacy, organizing parades and events, providing support for members and their families, and raising visibility and awareness in the community.

I HIGHLY suggest you go if you're even somewhat considering it (which it sounds like you are). It was one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences I've ever experienced.

I hope this helps! :-)

There is always a short business meeting to explain what has been going on in the area and with PFLAG. Sometimes there will be a speaker (46 -60 min) with a topic that relevant: gay youth, gay parenting, new welcoming churches, new laws for or against gay rights, upcoming events, fun raising, marches, etc. Then a short break (20 min) and everyone enjoys snacks. Afterwards, the large group breaks up into small groups for more personal discussions. If a quest comes, the person spends private time with a long term member privately so that he/she will understand what PFLAG does and how it can help. It's a wonderful group. And once you get involved, there's so much you can do to be more active in your own journey of self- acceptance or the understand and acceptance of your loved one. Then there's the preparation for pride parade in June. Everyone decides privately whether he/she is ready to tackle that. For the parents who have gotten to the acceptance stage and are ready for the next step, this is a biggie. My mother (78+) loves the parade even if she has to use a cane.
Try pflag.com - that's national. They'll tell you about the local chapters.
HUGS!!! (I have joined 6 chapters over the years.)

They drink, smoke pot, tell gay jokes and console each other about not having any grandchildren.
