Sure is a tragedy, at least he was one of the few people that truly lived life to the full and he managed to survive quite alot of other stuff!
Shortly after 11:00am local time on 4 September 2006, Irwin was fatally pierced in the chest by a stingray barb while diving off Queensland's Great Barrier Reef. The events were caught on camera and the footage is now in the possession of Queensland Police. He had been filming a segment for his daughter Bindi's upcoming television series. Irwin was in the area filming his own documentary, to be called Ocean's Deadliest, but weather had stalled filming. Irwin decided to take the opportunity to film some shallow water shots for his daughter's television program. After speaking to witnesses, Irwin contemporary Ben Cropp, a cameraman and spearfisherman, speculated that the stingray "felt threatened because Steve was alongside and there was the cameraman ahead..." In such a case, the animal responds by automatically flexing the serrated barb on its tail (up to 30 centimeters in length) upward. Unfortunately, the motion struck Irwin's chest and pierced his heart. The BBC reported that this was only the second known fatality in Australian history from a stingray attack, while The Age and CNN lists it as the third.

The Queensland Police Service notified his family and released a statement for the media concerning his death. News of his death prompted a public outpouring expressing shock and loss. Several Australian news websites went down because of high web traffic and talk-back radio experienced a high volume of callers expressing their grief, commemorating his passion and exuberance. Prime Minister John Howard, among many other politicians, expressed his "shock and distress" at the death, saying that "Australia has lost a wonderful and colourful son.” Steve Irwin's body was flown to a morgue in Cairns, where stunned family and friends were gathering on Monday night. His wife Terri was informed of her husband's death while on a walking tour in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park in Tasmania, and returned to the Sunshine Coast with their two children. Now, to commemorate Irwin's nobility and daringness for the sea, people all over the world attempt to express their sorrow and pain through putting little turtles on their MSN screennames. I, myself, like many others, feel that Irwin deserves more than just a digitalized form of a turtle. He deserves a digitalized form of a crocodile. Attempts were made to convince the Microsoft Service in making a crocodile emoticon for those who really respected the effort and contribution of our all time Australian deep sea hero, Steve Irwin.

Steve Irwin was unique and loved animals and nature, what a shock, a very likeable bloke and only 44.

I dont think so...
I believed he was a great australian until i went to New Zealand and saw his show on T.V. I realised that while it was a good conservational show for our country the way he acted was setting up an undesireable stereotype for Australians in other countries. But he was a good person with good intentions. R.I.P

Just found out through Yahoo Answers, so sad, and so unlucky, a Stingray Barb through the heart.

Thank you Steve for getting us all up close to the dangers of wildlife.

My thoughts are with his family at this time.

Yeah, he was really something...normally I don't watch childrens shows but he spoke to us of all ages...it's kinda hit me hard in a way I didn't expect...I guess it's the inner child in me...you know how it's still necessary to have ice cream when you're feeling down and nurture that little boy or girl inside of you? I just feel like I have lost a good friend and I never even met him...his poor family though...what a shame...I know they are just so very heartbroken....

In my opinion this guy was an absolute nutter performing some of the dare-devil acts he took part in, but boy did he entertain.

I was glued to the tele any time he was on.

He will be missed.

Thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
