I know that usually people are stung by treading on stingrays and that these are infrequently fatal if otherwise very painful. But in order to get stung in the heart surely one would have to be swimming very close up to the creature and worrying it to the point at which it needs to defend itself. Or am I wrong?

No, you are right. Although I wasn't there and have not heard or read the full story, Knowing him from his crocodile show there is no doubt in my mind he was playing around with it. Sting Rays are NOT an aggressive creature. 99.9% of people who are stung by them are stung in the foot. So for him to have been stung in the chest, I would have to believe that he was playing with it as he did with crocs. And I always thought he would meet his demise with wild life, BUT I always thought it would be with a croc. I am only glad that he didn't have his kid with him this time.

You're perfectly right. There's 17 documented cases in the history of the world of death by stingray. Steve Irwin would have had to have been doing something to make the stingray feel threatened or engangered to lash out.

If this has in connection with Irwin's accident, I think he was just too crazy to play with nature. Anyway, with regards to your question, stingrays or other animals will not attack unless they are provoked or they are being provoked. Sea creatures are more aggressive and wilder than those on land. A different scent of entity or the difference in thermal status signals danger, which opts them to attack your defenses.

Sounds as if he was close, but I wonder if the camera crew being around made the stingray feel threatened as well? Although, it would be nice to hear it explained, I hope the press does not get the footage.

You get stung by making the creature so nervous that it feels it has to defend itself. The competing needs of good TV and safety can result in tragic circumstances

I suppose the stingray in question could have been swung like a slimy spiked club by a human with murderous intent. On the other hand, your scenario is much more likely.

the two, it penetrated his chest and entered a piece of his coronary heart. A coroner's checklist hasn't been released besides the indisputable fact that and as a result, that's only memories that are being relied upon. that's been mentioned that Irwin brought about his very own loss of existence by pulling the barb out of his chest. different components have stated cardiac arrest because of the fact the reason for loss of existence.

Not necessarily, I think it's an element of surprise for both the swimmer and the stingray. It must be an accident.

yes, you are right. The sting ray just lashes out and some of the bigger ones can kill, but it is not their fault, as they have no intentsion to kill by nature but to defend and we are not part of their food source.

If you recall this guys antics on TV it was a degree of torment to serve his own need for self importance and ego. he was an ego maniac.

I don't care if you are a crocodile, you still feel fear if someone tugs at your tail or puts a noose round your jaws.

His love for nature was limited for his own glorification and sensationalism.
Ego and Selfish intention will always result in unhappiness or in this case death.

most probably there will a few cranks out their killing these poor creatures for fun.

It was a trigger not the cause. The poison had a bad reaction. Uncommonly bad. Usually people do not die. There must have been something wrong already and the sting just pushed him over.
