I did a lot of research on radar detectors not too long ago and when all was said and done I went with the Passport 8500 by Escort and I couldn't be happier. It's EASILY worth the money, particularly on long road trips where you have a tendency to speed out of boredom without even noticing. The only radar detector I've researched that could rival the 8500 was the Valentine V1 but it's also $500. I didn't want to be cheap and buy one of those Cobra or god forbid Vector type models but $500 was too much for me. The Passport 8500 hit the sweet spot financially and has already paid for itself several times over. I highly recommend this unit!

To me the best bang for your buch radar detector is the BEL 895, for $200 at Radio Shack. The BEL 895 is not the best but it is certainly up there with the top 3 radar detectors[Escort 8500 X50($300), BEL RX65($329.99), and Valentine 1($400)] I personally have a BEL Vector 995($270) and Valentine 1($400) and their is only a slight difference in detection range. I like both detectors equally due to their unique features.

You can pay as much for a radar detector as you want. All they do is let you know when police radar is around, they do not help keep you from getting a ticket at all. When it sounds off to police radar, he already has your speed. It is illegal for use in some states. Here in Virginia, where they are illegal, the State Police has radar detector detectors.

The escort is the best one for the money. I don't know of anyone actually owning the Valentine, although it does get good reviews. The problem I had was false alarms. They will eventually get you into a state of paranoia, lol. Although I tend to drive fast, I drive without a detector now. I just make sure someone on the road is driving faster than me, and follow that driver from a distance. I would like to point out, that although I may drive a little fast, I do not approve of constant lane changes. I stay out of the left lane to both avoid attention and to keep it open for faster drivers.

Save your money and drive the speed limit. Radar detectors don't work. I'm and ex-cop and I used to catch people with radar detectors all the time.
