I'm quite sure It'll be an African team, and this could happen not too far.
By now the overall best African WC performance I remeber was Nigeria '94. They had a GREAT stage1, starting with a square won on Bulgaria (4th place), next a 1-2 lost match with Argentina, with Maradona's amazing assists to Caniggia (btw after the match Maradona banned from WC having a positive test to Ephedrine, Argentina lost the next match, qualify however to final stage, and lost again in round of 16).
Winning again the last match with Greece, they reached round of 16. Here they faced Italy, a sinking team, qualified with an unimpressive 3rd place in an easy group. Nigeria was better than Italy, they scored first at 26' and then controlled the match. Italy was waiting for their star, Roberto Baggio, but nothing was happening. Coach Sacchi replaced the forward Signori with Zola at 65'. At 75' the ref had a mistake, sending off Zola. At 89', when Nigerians were celebrating, Baggio finally scored his first goal. In extra time Italy had a penalty and again Baggio scored.
So, Nigeria was out in round of 16', but they were HIGHLY impressive and deserved so far a better placement. Italy reached 2nd place, Bulgaria 4th.
Really unlucky, they were better than the great 1990 Cameroon who reached quarter-finals and lost a.e.t with England, and 2002 Senegal (lost in quarters, golden goal by Turkey, next 3rd)
This WC, Cote d'Ivoire was fighting in the worst group. Argentina (out on pks in quarter-finals with Germany) and Holland (disaster ref Ivanov against Portugal) were great opponents, and SRC itself wasn't so bad. Togue started WC having their coach willing to leave - unpaid wages, as for many players), anyway was winning the first match, then a red card allowed South Korea to draw and next win. Ghana! they only need to avoid that suicidal offside tactic against Brazil (who anyway scored 2 goals out of 3 in offside foul). Only Angola and Tunisia didn't impressed me at all.
Asian teams. Besides 2002 WC, with a stunning 4th place and round of 16 for the 2 host countries, South Korea and Japan respectively, I guess they're so far from African teams. SKA long run was controversial. They won both Italy (a.e.t) and Spain (p.s.o) with a lot of help form refs, Moreno and Al-Gandhour respectively. I guess their was only a lucky shoot, unlikely to happen again.
This WC, the same teams were the main Asian actors, and this means they're really the best ones... Korea wasn't able to pass an average group in stage1 (well - with France who was poorly performing).
Other teams all close their group with 1 point only: Japan lost their chance when winning against Australia. Iran and Saudi Arabia were definitively unimpressive.
CONCACAF teams are a whole different thing. Mexico and next USA have a good tradition in WC (of course, CONCACAF preliminaries are so far less competitive than UEFA and CONMEBOL ones, and this greatly helps them in usually gaining amazing FIFA rankings). In this WC Mexico reached round of 16, losing against the mighty Argentina in a.e.t. USA had a group harder than precition were saying, they didn't qualify as well as Czech, one of the Euro best teams...
Reading by numbers, traditions, results, anyone could easily disagree with me. Africa doesn't seem so competitive as Asia and North American are. But I guess Euro and SA teams always ruled WC because football is so far the more loved team sports in those countries. In Asia cricket and baseball share this preminence. In Africa and Mexico football is the main sport. USA can better explain what I'm saying - female football is popular - and USA ruled WORLD female football. On male side, ... hmm ... 'soccer' is a lesser team sport. And here are poor results. Asian countries as China and India have an huge number of players, but their championship are poorly organized and competitive. Indian Football Federation has a good plan to develope football playing between children, but it'll take a lot of time before they can take what they're seeding now...
