It's truly a tragedy. We've watched his show for so long, it almost feels like we know his family. I feel for them, his children are so young.

He died doing exactly what he loved, though, if we could all be that lucky, it'd be a blessing.

Yes I was upset to here it on the news. He took a lot of chances & to be killed by a stingray was the last thing I expected, Only three people killed by a stingray in Australia I would not have been as surprised if it had been a crocodile. My thoughts are with his family they will miss him & so will I.

I think he was a very lively person who made wildlife his passion which he managed to share with millions of people round the globe. He was an active naturalist who raised people's awareness of wildlife and the nature in general. I also remember the incident when he held his baby daughter too close to a crocodile in front of the camera. There was a world wide out cry against that then. He was a good family man but unfortunately this time he got too close to the very object of his passion.

On first seeing this guys work i thought he didnt have enough respect for the animals and creatures he came across with his camera crews. But with time he seemed to have a lot of knowledge about the creatures he come into contact with and made me wonder if he acualy had an overwhelming respect for the creatures and tried to view exsistance from the animals perspective. Maybe sting rays wern't this guys speciality. Would love to know if he increased conservation and awarness of animals, and wildlife in general. Put on an act for the cameras, but i suspect there was more to this guy than came across. I am going to the barrier reef has anyone else been there, how many people get attacked by sting rays??? *:( Rock on dude !!!!!! respext for animalkind.

Terrible. I just read the report. He was diving off his boat in Oz near the Barr Reef I think and it was a stingray barb through the chest. They think he would have suffered a cardiac arrest and he was dead on arrival at hospital.
A real shock and tragedy.....And his children now have no daddy.
Very sad news.

Yes, I was shocked when I turned on the TV this morning. Well, can't say I was "shocked", because what he did was a dangerous profession for obvious reasons, but it is still very sad. He had a great heart and personality. He loved his family, that's for sure. And he loved teaching people about animals and wildlife conversation.

RIP, Steve

Quite a few threads here about Steve at the moment..

I'll repeat what I posted a bit earlier:

Yeah he passed away today doing what he loved.

Would it be any different if a skydiver died because the parachute didn't open? Or a bungee jumper died because the cord snapped?

Being Australian, I never really liked him (long story, but alot of Australian's always thought he was a bit of a tozer!), but I still respect him for doing what he loved.

It was really strange turining on my computer and finding out this news because I had just been reading Douglas Adam's Salmon of Doubt and he was talking about the great barrier reef. It was kind of a weird coincidence.

I'm so sorry for his wife and daughter. He was such a jolly chap.
