So the wives won't run away. You see, Chinese men are very male chauvinist back then. They want to be in total control over women and they use excuses like small feet makes the women looks more attractive. Really ridiculous!

It is no longer a practice in China although there are still some very old women alive who did have it done to them. The reason for the practice is the same as any form of bodily decoration and mutilation, it is regarded as attractive by that social group. Some of these activities become excessive such the large wooden discs inserted into the lower lip of some African tribes or in the mountains of Thailand where women have metal rings put round their necks as they grow which extends their necks to the point that they are unable to hold up their heads if the rings are removed. I do not see any difference in these custom to the way Americans deform their breasts with implants, punch holes through just about every part of the body you can think of (and a few places I don't care to think of), go through major surgery to have all sorts of bits changed and have crude art work tattooed all over themselves. We all want to look our "best" but best is not always the same in every culture.

It was considered feminine and attractive from a male standpoint for women to have tiny feet. But then women got to the point where they couldn't even walk after that was done. And women in foreign countries don't always have alot of (or any) control over what men decide they should and should not do.

IN the old days, there were a popular traveling troupe of dancing girls. All the girls were hand-picked due to their tiny, delicate feet. Their popularity made tiny delicate feet a desirable trait to have for women, especially daughters. When genetics failed them, parents took matters to their own hands. Pretty barbaric, but this increased the chance of the daughter marrying into a good, wealthy family.
