No; not even close. Stingrays are very shy and timid. They only purposely sting when stepped on and if they are cornered or startled, their first thought is to swim away.
Unfortunately when you startle them, they will turn around and whip their barbed stinger (it's also covered with a toxin/venom) and if it hits you it will inject venom and stab you like a bayonet on an old rifle.
Either his heart was damaged and he blead out, or the venom caused a heart attack. Being so far away from land, he had no chance.
They actually have sting ray petting zoo's in several states where kids can pet them.
It's not even close. Not too many crocs; especially salt water crocs will let you touch them.

I would not say that they are more dangerous than crocs, but if they catch you in the chest wall or stomache area, then it can be fatal. A large stingray carry's two stings in the tail that can be 30 centimeters or one foot long! if they hit in the chest cavity they could pierce the heart the toxins would shut down your immune system as well. They usually get you in a hand, leg or foot, but in Steve's case he was just unlucky! I hope this has answered your question. Wheeliebin.

They are usually placid, but I guess Steve got too close.
If it got him in the foot, he would still be here, but it got him in the chest. Freak accident.
His is only the 3rd death caused by sting ray in the last 80 years. I wouldn't call them dangerous as such. His number was up.
RIP Steve.

Stingrays are usually pretty non-aggressive, but they can defend themselves when neccessary. He WAS in their environment.

Anything can be dangerous if it's wild and you're not paying attention.
