And before people type "but who would collect the garbage/look after the sewage system/you are an idiot for asking this question/duh " etc - please just think about what we NEED them for.

They only cause trouble. I think the whole gig is outmoded - how can we replace them, and with what?

we need to make a law that anyone who wants a political office get banned from politics and go back to the constitutional method: every adult voter joins a group of 10 and select one captain, every 10 captains select a captain, etc to captains of 100,000's. Then the captains of tens and hundreds and etc search out persons qualified to do the jobs of governing. The voting process becomes a mere formality because real people who know what they are doing have already selected only persons who can actually do the job.

I follow politics very closely and have for years because of my occupation.

With that said, I can say that yes we do BUT your premises are absolutely correct and we do need a major change. I, personally, believe we need term limits on all politicians. I really think that would fix the vast majority of the problems I have seen.

One major problem is the power on the hill that is accrued... yes accrued. I have never understood why a senator that is on his 4th term in office has more power than a 1st term senator. They both were elected by their constituents, etc.. and should be equal.

Senoir congresspersons dictate who gets on all the committees, etc... A freshman congressperson is at their mercy and basically has no power to get any of his/her agenda even to the floor for consideration.

Now to actually answer your question:
1. We need politicians because the vast majority of society is busy with life and does not have time to examine all the details of each issue. That is actually why the forefathers came up with our 'republic' concept.
2. Most of them have studied in-depth the processes of government... the necessary procedures.
3. Legalities of legislation... there is a lot involved in the creation of legislation.

Once again, I really think we need term limits!!

a) If there were no politicians we would have to figure out how to run a country by ourselves. That means we'd need to educate the majority of the populace about how to properly debate an issue (i.e. not public forums, they'd need to actully *learn* how to debate).

b) Who would we laugh at?

c) Where would the general populace point the finger if something went wrong and they didn't want to take the blame?

d) Politicians are useful for many things: You can blame them for the world going down the drain, they provide passive entertainment, you can pile on more blame, it means that your average John or Jane Doe on the street doesn't have to worry about it, you can listen someone tell you lies for years on end before deciding to turn around and shove them out of office, it gives people somehing to gripe about on a daily basis.

e) The only logical way to replace politicians is with more politicians. And to do that you'd have to give people power, power creates greed, greed creates corruption and then you have the whole mess all over again.

We need politicians! To answer your question about how we can replace them - (quote is not mine) “Politicians are like diapers. They both need changing regularly and for the same reason.” VOTE! Whatever you might believe politically let it be known, band together with like people take a stand and let your voice be heard.
