I always watched his show and how dangerously close he would get with deadly animals and I always thought that he would die doing that stuff. And sure enough, he was killed by a stingray while filming a documentary. Not to slight Steven Irwin, I admired his courage, but maybe he was too brave for his own good.

i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

Actually, I was surprised. I guess I'd seen him do dangerous things so often that I just didn't think about it. It's a terrible shame though, he did great work on the behalf of animals.
I had an 8, 9 and 10 year old with me when I found out. The 10 year old thought he would've died from cancer or some other disease. The 9 year old thought it would"ve been a croc, and the 8 year old was just upset. It's such a shame that Bindy and Bob will grow up without their Dad.

Many people are saying that but it's really not true. Jacques Cousteau did some of the most dangerous dives of all time and did it for several decades. He also did experimental submarine dives in deep water; even the military was amazed at his feats. He died of a heart attack @ 87 y/o.

Jacques Cousteau was swimming with sharks before Steve Irwin was born, and without much protection.

Marlon Perkins who many older people will remember was on the loved show, "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom", was bitten several times by poisonous snakes including one time during rehearsal before a show by a Timber rattler. He was also bitten by a cotton mouth and a gaboon viper who are the largest snakes of it's kind with the most venom and largest fangs. He survived them all, and he died of cancer at 84 y/o.

These 2 icons changed the way we see animals and were inspirations to most of the animal guy's/gals on tv today and they lived long happy lives. I think this was just plain terrible luck.

Yeah, I was always just waiting for him to get tagged, but always hoping he wouldn't, you know...... he was so special, but as far as "but maybe he was too brave for his own good" goes, I would have to say that "he was what he was."

Steve Irwin was Steve Irwin, and if he hadn't been dancing around grumpy salt water crocs or grabbing Taipans by the tail, well he wouldn't have been the Steve Irwin that so many of us grew to love and respect..........

As naive as I was, I didn't think he'd die so young but I did have a feeling he'd go out during one of his daring acts. Pity really, he was a great person for animals because he brought a lot of awareness to the world and I certainly started watching Animal Planet because of him.

It is a great loss to the wildlife societies of the world. He has invloved in studying the animals behavious and physiology, learned about the animals and informed about the animals to the world. His loss should not be compensate with anything for their family and the hosted nation, Australia. We submit our condolences to his family members and his organisation associated.

CRIKEY!

I expected this to happen at some point. I loved the enthusiasm he had for his work. He seemed like a really great, dedicated guy. Terri must be devastated but I bet she knew this would happen, too.

R.I.P., Steve
