Windows ME has a reformat option and the discs to do it with. Keep in mind, however, that anything you added since you got your machine will most likely be gone. So I would put any correspondence, photos, etc. on a CD to upload later. All your programs will also need updating and any toolbars, games, all the things you downloaded will be gone, and you will have to download them again. Sometimes, if your machine is totally infected, it is the only option. Good luck.

This is the best way
Use XP disk as you would to do a normal install at the instalation screen pick repair windows leave file system as it is this will re install windows but leave your files as they are on the computer
all that will not be available are any updates that you installed due to your windows being back to its original install DONOT pick the change file system or your drive will be auto formatted that is a clean install that destoys all on the hard drive you will still need your serial number to re install

formatting the hard drive is a good option but you can also load the image of the hard drive... There are some image taking softwares like Norton Ghost... it has some advantages than formatting the hard drive such as it takes less time to fresh your hard drive...

you want to format the drive.
insert your windows xp cd and reboot
delete the partition, format it and install windows.
alternatively use a program like partition magic.
WARNING: formatting will remove all data on the drive, only do this if you have made backups of essential data.

get the name of the drive manufacturer - Maxtor or Seagate etc, and use the ZERO drive utility to factory zero the drive .
It is the only way to truly get rid of any trace of everything ( without special equipment )
