World-renowned Australian "crocodile hunter" and television environmentalist Steve Irwin has been killed by a stingray on the famed Great Barrier Reef.

Another great loss for animal lovers worldwide?

He's a brave person and I love watching him. Admire him for his respect for all animals.

How else would you describe him. Be nice!

I remember seeing him on tv for the first time in the mid-1990s in Canada, and screaming as the crocodiles leaped out of their pool of water at him. A lot of people who talk about how he tempted death for a living by working with dangerous animals have missed the point. His whole technique of engaging with animals like that in a very direct tactile manner showed that they were still just animals -- and that they needed just as much care and conservation as the animals that people like more, for example whales, dolphins, wolves, lions, polar bears, pandas, tigers, elephants, birds, monarch butterflies, etc. I support the World Wildlife Fund with a charitable contributions every year, and their literature is always full of photos of these animals because those are the ones that people immediately feel some sympathy and affection for. But Steve Irwin showed that less attractive and more frightening animals could receive the same level of public concern and financial support. And he did it precisely because his laid-back, daredevil manner made it clear to people that the seemingly impossible (hugging a crocodile) could be done without getting your leg bitten off.

In this respect, he ranks among the highest levels of conservationists and naturalists who successfully worked to make people understand and appreciate that which they instinctively could not understand or appreciate. He ranks with Gerald Durrell (who changed the whole conception of zoo-keeping and captive breeding programs, especially for less attractive and less popular endangered species, and made people understand the importance of saving such creatures through his books and television shows), and Dian Fossey (who changed the way we perceive gorillas).

Irwin's manager made this point earlier today:

"He has left a legacy," Stainton told CNN. "That people do love some of the unloved animals like crocodiles and reptiles that people wanted to kill. He's actually put a position in their hearts for them. I want that to continue. ... I want people to really go out there and remember Steve Irwin for what he really was, which was a great conservationist, saving wildlife and actually promoting wildlife that people didn't love."

Our one and only Crocodile Hunter, though had been called up by the Lord, will be always remembered in our hearts.

Steve Irwin was a passionate advocate of wild animals. Having heard of about his demise, I was extremely appalled and felt really sad for his loved ones.

My deepest condolences to his family.

Yes, I was shocked when I turned on the TV this morning. Well, can't say I was "shocked", because what he did was a dangerous profession for obvious reasons, but it is still very sad. He had a great heart and personality. He loved his family, that's for sure. And he loved teaching people about animals and wildlife conversation.

RIP, Steve

It is indeed a terrible loss, not only to the 'animal world' but also to his friends and family. It was the news I woke up to this morning, and has put a shadow over my day. I only saw him back at Easter, doing what he loved, the croc show, and now this....it really is a grave time.

He had a great love for animals and spent nearly all of his life trying to protect them and bring them to the public.

He was brave and lived his life doing what he wanted and what he believed in, despite the dangers.

He deserves nothing but the greatest of respect and my thoughts are with his family

The more I think about it the sadder I feel.I feel terrible for his wife,Terri, and his baby,Bob,but it's poor little Bindi,I think who will take it the hardest.Whenever she'd be on television with her Dad ,she'd always say how he was the smartest and strongest and best Dad in the world and how she wanted to be just like him.She was so crazy about him.Little Bob is not yet three,so it won't affect him as much. But I feel so bad for all of his family, friends and fans.RIP,Stevo.
