If you must get a snail, get only one, and make it a Golden apple snail as they need a mate to reproduce. I have a golden apple snail and it has done a fair job of cleaning the algae out of the tank. They can reproduce like crazy though, and they do eat aquarium plants- all of them. One little snail can eat through 2 full grown aquarium plants in approximatly an hour. You would be better off to get a Pleco for algae control, or put plastic plants in your aquarium that are snail safe.

Don't do it! Snails are near impossible to control. They reproduce like crazy and can easily take over any tank. Get yourself a sucker fish. Go check out the sucker fish at your local pet store. They control the algae better than snails and also eat the food that just sits on the bottom keeping your tank clear and clean.

There are a number of snails that would be idea. Apple, mystery, and trapdoor snails. They reproduce slowly, and tend not to eat your plants. Also the above snails need a mate so a single snail will not reproduce.

Bonjoviegroupie is correct. Snails breed faster than crabgrass or rabbits. Get a plecostomus instead. They won't bug the other fish, they clean the glass, and they have loads of personality. You'll be glad you did....
