I know that if there is a rectangular prism say, 6cm by 4cm by 2cm then you multiply it all and get 48cmcubed. But what if you have something like 6 by 4 by 2? Is the answer 48cubed or just 48?

It is 48 cubic centimeters, or 48 cubic inches, or 48 whatevers. You don't cube the 48.

"6 by 4 by 2" actually means
"6 units by 4 units by 2 units"
so the volume is
= 48 cubic units or 48 units³

For area (with no specified unit) the unit to use is square units. NEVER EVER forget that. I have a bad sad experience with this one.

Volume can be worked out by using Volume=length x width x height. No matter what the numbers the answer is always in cubic centimetres of whatever measurement is used. The two boxes you used as an example may have different dimesions but still have the same volume.

Hope that helped.

48cubed is 110592. So, no, I would just write the answer as 48. If it's in volume, the unit is cubed (not the number), or it could be in capacity.
