No, I can't. However, I think the UK are to the USA what Greece was to the Roman Empire. The Greeks had an enormous empire before the Romans, with help of the civilisations in Athens, Thebes and Sparts, and Alexander the Great's conquests of course. At that time, Rome could not match it, but when it became independent it took its inspiration from the country that ruled over them and built itself a massive empire soon after that. The comparisons to Britain and America are all there.
When the Roman Empire fell, the mediaeval period meant Greece and Rome became less powerful, though the religion that had taken over the world had important bases in Rome and Byzantion / Constantinople (present day Istanbul). Should we also further this comparison, when the American empire will fall, and the world order will change - the then dominant party (China maybe?) won't bother with the UK much. And like Greece between 500 ad and the present, Britain might be a country pride of its past, that doesn't however have any significance in the world. The same or worse would be true for America though, take heart in that.

I would tend to liken the UK to Wessex more than Ancient Rome. I do think "disaster" is too strong a word but "reduced influence in the world" is not.
I would say that the time of the UK as an independant force is over and its time to concentrate on ensuring that that great continent of ours, Europe, gives the world a real alternative to resurgent militant Islam and the excesses of the States.

I think we have already had our collapse cos there is no British Empire anymore. Historically speaking every empire falls and at the moment the USA is top dog, but for how long? Our destiny is interlinked with so many other countries commonwealth and european and so I dont think we are an island in that sense. Geographically, by the way, there are a number of islands.

Yes, we can compare our beautiful island to Ancient Rome in many ways. And yes, it does appear to be heading for disaster thanks to greed and hate and incompetence by the current ruling party. We are in difficult times. It is not too late to do something about it.
Let's get Tony Blair OUT a.s.a.p. and let's withdraw all troops from Iraq, these would be two positive actions.
Then let us try to elect a government that is more caring, more efficient, and less bloody corrupt than this one.
For a very good illustration of both "Greed" and "Ancient Rome", look no further than John Prescott, that wonderful role model!

I think everything that has a beginning has an end. As the empirical state ended and democracy began, democracy is now facing its worst judgement of all time and is failing miserably to stand up to the capitalistic rulers- puppet makers and controllers. A new dawn will rise where everyone will realise we gotta rebuild our links to love, and less ties to money. Until that day, it is not only the UK which is failing, but every other nation that took their cues from them, as well.

The UK is not alone and hopefully it is not headed for ruin. As for the "empire", it has not existed for awhile. Whereas England use to be "top dog", the times have changed and the powers shifted. However, when it comes to the UK being threatened, I say "Rule Britannia".

Yes! This has been my theory for some time. Fallen empires, like the Romans. Who once they gave up their war mongering ways, went soft from within.
It is the rise and fall of an empire.
And I think the moslem empire is starting.
