Is there any potential danger to either one? Foam is less exspensive, does that mean it's better?

My pediatrician said that the foam mattresses have a higher SIDS rate than the coil mattresses. Go pick the firmest one you can find. If you have a Babies R' Us near you, they employees there will be able to help you find the best fit for you. The Simmons line is wonderful, and will only run you between $80-$100. These will last through about four kids if you use a plastic mattress pad. Also, don't waste your money on any of the SIDS prevention pillows or props. They have been proven to actually increase the chances of SIDS in some cases. Your best bet, is a firm, coil mattress with a plastic mattress pad, and a tight fitting sheet. No blankets or toys. I hope this helps!

Actually, the best mattress is a 5" foam mattress made by Colgate, called the Classica.

Babies need a firm sleeping surface, and foam can be just as firm as coils. The advantage with foam is it's easier to lift out of the crib when you need to change the sheets due to a late-night blowout.

I used it in my daughter's toddler bed when she outgrew her crib, and am now using it for my second child. It looks and feels brand new.

We just went with coil but bought the mattress with the most. We have a convertable crib and wanted a good mattress that would last a good while. So I would assume it depends on how long you want to use the mattress and for how many babies.

We were told to get a mattress that had at least fourty coils if we went that route.
