It's saddening something like this happened, though at least he wasn't killed by a croc, that would have been a blow to what he represented, "The Crocodile Hunter".
Nature has always had it's ways of protection, even before it realises it's not being attacked. He'll definitely be remembered as the few brave and daft at the same time, and to be the few who were killed by a stingray.
My condolences to his wife and two children,
Rest In Peace Steve, you've been an Inspiration.

I completely agree! Everytime he would play with some poisonous snake, I'd think, what a dumbass, I hope it bites him! But now that he's dead, I feel so let down. And by a stingray... I don't know how quite to describe it, except for shock. I guess after all these years I didn't think there was anything Steve Irwin couldn't handle. Guess that was a mistake on my part.

On 4 September 2006, shortly after 11:00 a.m. local time (01:00 UTC), Irwin was killed by a stingray barb while filming an underwater documentary in the Great Barrier Reef off the Low Isles near Port Douglas, north of Cairns, Queensland, Australia. News reports say he was stung either through his heart or through the left side of his chest and suffered a fatal heart attack. After he was stung, his crew called for medical help and the Queensland Rescue Helicopter responded, taking him to Cairns Base Hospital. However, Irwin was immediately pronounced dead at the scene. The Queensland Police Service notified his family and released a statement for the media concerning the event.

The man made his living by irritating fast, fanged, poisonous things. Did you really expect him to die any other way?
Still, it's surprising that a stingray got him, since they're completely nonaggressive- their spine pops up automatically when the ray is stepped on or otherwise squashed or harmed. Of all the creatures in the world that wanted to bite the hell out of the man, the one that slew him didn't even mean to.
And yeah, I miss him too. He had serious moxie.

I feel exactly the same way you do. I've always said that he'd get himself killed one of these days, never expecting it to actually happen! I feel terribly sad for his wife and kids, hopefully the fact that he died doing what he loved best will ease the pain a little. But it's an awful thing to deal with.

I used to joke about him getting bitten and found him irritating when I first saw him, but I have been an admirer of his for a long time now. He was fantastic in so many ways. He will be sorely missed, my thoughts go out to his family.

My niece and I used to watch him on "The Wiggles" (same episode about 20 times a day).
The old dangling the baby in front of the crock at the zoo was a bit of bad press for him, but I think we all got past that.
He taught us how to say in Aussie:
"Snouyk" (snake)
"Doainjyurus" (dangerous)
"Crockadawyill" (crocodile)
oh and ofcourse "croykee!" (Oh Sh**!)

Yep! He's gone. God wanted him to come and show him some crocodile tricks. I just knew it. I knew that someday, this dude would lose a leg or a arm but I didn't know it went this far. I hope he goes to heaven.
