well first off, you're using a PC :-( You're better off shutting it down. I've fixed plenty of PCs (no macs, ever, for some reason) and i've seen a lot that have problems waking up from sleep mode. Shutting it off clears your ram and other things making your computer ready for a freash start in the morning.

Stand by if you will be back on the pc soon, shut down if you will not. In standby it is still generating heat & sucking dust into the fans, so shut down when not in use.

shut down is better for long periods of time. stand by should only be used if you contemplate returning to the computer within the hour ... standby stores an image of the active programs and resources as well as all register values ...sort of a frozen state ... it is not always a reliable way to do things because it can be affected by peripherals that drop offline .. especially network connections

Depends on how long you expect to not be using the computer. If I'm going to be off it for a few days, I shut it down, otherwise just let it go automatically to standby.

no!
i leave on as my computer does automatic timed functions
like defrag
clean
and upgrades
and update time every hour
if you have dialup you can take it off line to free up your phone line
programs will often upgrade when you return to the net
one exception is thunderstorms or being gone for any extended time like more than a day
but disconnect from internect connection and power in those cases

shuting down saves energy, your comp does not suck dust, and it wont heat up your room. and belive it or not the components in your computer are only rated for so many hours of use expecialy the fans and power supply

I leave my computer on all day because i like to check my email ect like every 10 mins but i turn it off when im gone or overnight. just be sure to restart every now and then to clear up some RAM.

It depends upon the circumstances. If you want your machine to
physically last longer, the obvious answer is shutdown. If you make and keep regular back ups and don't care, leave it on.
Just keep in mind that computers left on all of the time are much more vulnerable to hackers and other security threats.

in a normal machine booting takes about 30 secs. stand by also takes about the same time. in addition, it is normal for standby machines not to come to life when u want them. then u need to cut off electricity. u have more problems. besides, as stated by other friend, the ram is cleared-many things get sorted out when restarted.
