Well, May his soul rest in peace, surely the animal world will miss him and his contribution to wild life will have a temporary setback.
Meanwhile, just a skeptical thought - I think he went a little too far in proving his point throughout his documentaries and this was one of them, guess he knew the risks he was taking all along.

Yeah. He was pierced through the chest with the tail of an adult stingray. Their tale barbs can be as long and sharp as kitchen knives. Some people have said he was poisoned, but if he was stabbed in the chest he would have died from blood loss before the poison could take effect.
There are reports coming from Australia that he was attacked, but it sounds a bit funny - they normally leave people alone unless they feel very threatened, and Irwin normally knows how to behave around animals. In fact it is the first stingray fatality since 1945, and only the third in Australian history.
One of the worst parts is apparently his wife Lyn still doesn't know because she is mountain hiking in the remote central highlands of Tasmania and can't be contacted....
Seeya, Steve. God Bless. Rest in peace.

I was actually really bummed when I read about it about 90 minutes ago. I was so sad I went and woke up my husband and told him about it.
Steve Irwin was, in my opinion, really fun to watch because he was so passionate about what he was doing. I remember watching a special he did where he was at an orangutan sanctuary in SE Asia. There was an orphan baby, and he was holding her, and he was talking to her, and cooing, and calling her sweetheart, just like he would to a human baby, and I remember thinking, "this guy really loves his work, and he really cares about animals".
I am very sad for his family. I always worry when someone famous dies that their family won't be allowed to grieve properly because of intrusions from the public, so I really hope this is not the case here. I am just bummed he got killed, and I hope his wife and kids will be okay.
And I don't know if I will ever hear someone say "Crikey!", or look at a man in khaki shorts and shirt the same way again :)

Seriously??? Death by stingray? He was great and really brave/foolish. I feel awful for his family, because although his wife seemed like she loved the animals and adventure too, I think it was his passion that drove their lives together. How could you not love that guy? I hope the stingray was a 'goorgeous creature!' Wow I'm surprised he died that way- he was really reckless but he seemed to know what he was doing, and certainly knew his way around wild animals. I guess you play with fire and you get burned. Here's to an interesting life!

Steve "Crocodile Hunter" Irwin's death came as a surprise to me, just having learned of it moments prior to logging on here, however--it comes as no surprise. Irwin's perpetual passion for the animal world earned him impressive degrees in zoology and veterinary medicine.....and he was well respected by colleagues in these fields of study.
It was Iriwn's dream to promote endangered species protection world-wide and offer a zoo-theme park dedicated to that cause. He sought thrilling audiences with daring close encounter stunts with highly dangerous wild animals as a means to reach that goal--and it worked well for him to realize his dream.
However, such daring feats with wild untamed animals DOES carry inherent risks, and it was only a matter of time that Irwin would face severe bodily damage or death this way--as would anyone in any profession where one is put in harm's way.
I feel the discolor of sorrow for his surviving family. I'd like to think even the wild animals he's personally encountered all left with a sense of respect; sensing Irwin's simple passion for looking out for their survival as a species.
Maybe even they will solemnly remember Steve Irwin also.

More like disturbing. My brother and I used to make such jokes about him buying the farm because he got just a little too close to a crocodile or something. We'd make fun of how he had his (very) pregnant wife bobbing up and down on that boat of his in rough water or how he had his kid with him when he fed that one croc chicken. Now, he actually dies from a similar incident and it isn't funny anymore. I never seriously thought he was ever in any danger because he is such an expert. I feel guilty. Did he do those things because of people like me who thought it was cool? I feel responsible.

Oh my goodness! I just saw that on MSN.com how totally shocking. Then again, he did mess around with live, dangerous animals. May his spirit rest in peace.
